...I am not much of a cook- but learning
I would like to make something nice for my friend's parents who are coming over at 11:00 am next Saturday for an early lunch.

Maybe like a brunch type of spread because of the time. A basket with bagels, different spreads, lox, egg/tuna salad etc. Fruit salad, maybe some danishes, a frittata?

Re: suggestions?-having a couple over for early lunch?
I made these once and they were a big hit:
Easy Stromboli:
1 Tube of Pilsbury French Loaf 1/2 lb. thinly sliced ham 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
Preheat oven to 375. On a greased cookie sheet or baking stone, unroll the french loaf so that it is approximately 12" x 14". Place ham slices on dough about 1/2" away from all edges. Spread mozzarella over ham slices. From the short end of the dough, begin rolling the dough back into a loaf, encasing the ham and cheese. Pinch ends shut and place on cookie sheet seam side down. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle parmasan cheese if desired. Bake in oven for 20 - 25 minutes until golden brown. Cool 5 - 10 minutes on a wire rack before slicing.
I made them using ham & american, roast beef & mozz. You could do turkey, chicken, etc. Really any type of sandwich combo. Set it up with different condiments or sauces for dipping, some macaroni & potato salad and you're good to go. You can roll them in advance and put them in the oven about 30-40 minutes before you want to serve them.

I agree brunch food: breakfast casserole, quiche, bagels, chicken salad, fruit salad. Not all of this of course, just this type of food.

You can do a light lunch with some wraps, pasta salad and potato salad and maybe fresh fruit.
Or you can do a brunch with bagels or french toast casserole, quiche, fruit salad.

I would do this as well.
I would prob add some cold cuts to the mix.
You could do a fun salad to...with goat cheese, craisins etc.

I'm kind of obsessed with the idea of breakfast pizza, and I am sure you can adapt it to make it easier or just different flavors.
