Suggestions for people who would like to get a Dog

Do research on your breed
Spend time with the pet you are going to get. Don't just walk in, say, "Oh, he/she is so cute", and take the animal home.
Ask about history. Ask where the dog came from, etc.

I am so tired of reading posts about people who get a dog home, realize he has temperment problems, and have to give them away. It's horrible. I hope some of you realize that a dog gets euthanized when reported for aggressive behavior at a shelter. They would have a better life just being left in a shelter.

Please, do your research.

and if you're into a certain breed RESEARCH the breed.

i know a poster got a beagle from a pet shop and returned him a day or two later because "he cried too much"

beagles are EXTREMELY vocal dogs!

do research on breeds.

(on their temperment, grooming needs, excerise needs, health problems, etc)

Re: Suggestions for people who would like to get a Dog

I know that this is directed to my post, and I agree with you... for the most part.

My parents know alot about the breed. This is their second dalmation. Their first was very sick, they paid for surgery when she went blind from detached retinas-only for her to go blind again in 6 months, they checked her urine 3x/day and gave her insulin twice a day when she had diabetes, they gave her her synthroid every day when she had hypothyroidism. They took care of her like a child until the day she died (at home).

They love this dog, they love this breed. They do not love the fear that he may attack my 4 year old son.

They didnt get him from a shelter, they rescued him from a family who was going to send him to a shelter (which like you said probably would have put him to sleep).

So perhaps you can open your mind a little and not be so quick to pass judgement.

Quite honestly, this has nothing to do with you, as I didnt even read your post. A friend just called me who adopted a Chow, and he was being aggressive, and now she wants to give him away. I told her I would take him until I found a good home for him.

I am sorry your parents are going through this.

Re: Suggestions for people who would like to get a Dog

I understand the point of doing research. However, in my situation, I had no way of knowing the dog's history and I took my chances. Long story there. I went into it knowing a lot about the breed, but VERY naive to the fact that a 1 year old dog has had time to develop issues. If I could have learned more about him, I would have. Now I am living with a dog who is one of the greatest things to happen to me in a long time, but he requires tons of patience and time.

I've posted here about his issues and I do not know whether anyone has judged me for what I have said. But I know that my heart is in the right place and that not many people could handle this dog better than I am. That sounds snooty but I don't care.

I assume that the initial post was not directed at me because I am not getting rid of my dog.
I just figured I'd reply in case I was one of the posters that people wonder about.

i work with kids and i look at many parents and think, 'what the heck are they doing?' Some pressure them so much that they're having anxiety attacks at 8, others coddle them so much that they do no work, and know that they can get away with it.

I get so angry, but then I need to step back and realize that many of them are doing the best they can.

Same with dogs. Many people are doing the best that they can.

I researched Boston's... not extensively, but I did look at a few websites and read a book before we got Katie. We were familiar with Boston's since our friend had one, and we spent several days with katie before we brought her home.

Did we research her past health issues as much as we should have? Probably not, but frankly, we were trusting and believed what we were told. Did we expect that when we got her that she would already have stage 3 cancer? Absolutly not.

At this point we have spent $1400 in the last month since this whole ordeal began. That's my husband's paycheck for a month. We are doing the best we can for her. It is tearing us up inside that we may not be able to go forward with the chemo, but honestly, we can't go bankrupt over this when the doctors have told us that it's probably too far progressed.

In the future will be do a little more research, especially if we adopt an adult dog? Absolutly.

Bottom line, you can do all the research in the world, and can still get thrown for a loop. You can have the same breed your entire life, and still get thrown for a loop.

Some people are doing the very best that they can.

I think this is getting ridiculous now.

We must not judge every single person who cannot be the bestest of the bestest pet owner.

People are HUMAN and make mistakes.....WE ALL DO....

This is like the 500th post about dont do this , dont do that....meanwhile there is half as many posts about people giving up their pets, etc... Its actually NOT a common thing ( around these parts) but turned into a cardinal sin at every turn.....

I think its great some of you are advocates, but I think your taking it to a drama level thats not needed.

So until YOUR DOG is peeing all over your house, Destroying all you own, biting your children or friends, family..., putting you into bankruptcy due to its ill health ETC......You have really no right to judge another....

<------- sorry....stepping off my box now...

Who is judging Donna? And 500th post, I seriously doubt it. And I think it's great that I am an advocate, and I will continue to fight for the rights of animals. And if my dogs WERE peeing on my carpet, which they dont because they are trained otherwise, I would do everything in my power to get to the root of the problem. And everyone who does own a pet, should be the "bestest of the bestest pet owner". We choose our pets, they do not choose us.

And if someone is going into bancruptcy over a pets health, they are doing something wrong. A pet is a commitment both financially and emotionally.

Cardinal sin? Cmon. If you dont like the post, don't read it.

Deb, Katlyn's health issues are something you could not have predicted. I am not talking about that. I am talking about the "My dog peed on the floor three times, and I am at my wits end". "I have a baby now, and the dog seems agressive.".

I am sorry but this response is totally unnecessary. All Kristin's post is saying is to research and think before you get a dog. That is not preaching or judging, that is a fact that anyone who loves animals would applaud. Frankly, anyone who would object to that message shouldn't have a dog.

Re: Suggestions for people who would like to get a Dog

I think that there is a need for it, since so many people come on here & ask questions about a dog only to find out it is a breed trait, or a simple training issue that could have been prevented with proper attention. I think this is not directed at any one or two posters, but to the community-at-large. Yes, we cannot predict the future and yes, sometimes a dog/cat/pet needs to be given away. It is sad, but sometimes it is what's best. However, there have been way too many posts about "what should I do?"

1- know that training your pet is a 24/7/365 job. It cannot be done in an 8 week course, and constant re-inforcement is necessary. Also, it can be more or less difficult depending on the breed. It can also be expensive if you need a professional.

2- your pet will be a member of your family - plain & simple. Know that changes in the family will also affect your pet.

3 - pets cannot talk. Out-of-the ordinary behaviour may indicate a problem. You will need to be in-tune to your pet to give it the best care/treatment if something is amiss.

4 - VET CARE CAN BE EXPENSIVE.

Just a few things to think about. Every family is different and can allow for different things. Personally I cannot see anything changing how I feel about all (5) of my dogs, and I would love to get more, but life changes and I do not know what it will be in the future.

Thing is NO ONE can stop for a second and read or understand what Im saying, and I refuse to be part of the drama. You or anyone else is gonna read into it what you want...

I DO stand by what I wrote....100%.

I think advice /tips...etc is GREAT and should be continued...

I think though this board needs more TACT and understanding. Especially from the people who have experienced NOTHING like the ones needing advice, yet love to jump in and tell them why they are so bad, so wrong etc.

Did you notice how many people dont post here anymore?

Its very obvious and its because people get attacked so easily.....

And Im not pointing fingers....Making a general statement about the nature of the "Advice" given over here, and this thread....whatever your intentions truly were.....seemed like the same old thing all over again when a thread about "what to do with a dog" was posted.

Now if you STILL cant understand where Im coming from...then like I said...not worth my time, fighting is not enjoyable to me .....

Maybe my ORIGINAL post was a little harsh and dramatic on my part, I will concur to that, but I have a point, I know other people agree with me and I .....without being a Pollyanna...... would like to really see some more damn compassion towards PEOPLE around here when they are in a bad place....the same compassion many of you give to the "dogs/cats"......

Donna, I dont want to fight with you either. I completely, and TOTALLY understand where you are coming from. But, there are some of us here who feel very strongly about our views when it comes to animals. They are innocent creatures, and I know you love them too. You cant deny that there have been posts where people have given up way to easily on an animal. I respect your stance, but please respect mine. It is something I am extremely passionate about. I belong to numerous foundations, rescue groups, have taken animals in, etc. I express my opinion because there ARE people who think animals are disposable, and maybe if I speak up, people will realize they are NOT.

If all your posts ( and some other peoples) were written like the one you just posted, I would agree 100%....I do agree with you bottom line...

For me its just sometimes there appears a lack of respect towards the posters, yet tons of respect for the animals.......but I agree your general stance on wanting to help the animals is noble and I do give you credit for it.

I agree. When we got Casey we just didnt realize how hyper Goldens can be...over time we adjusted and give her plenty of exercise but she needs a lot of attention and time....and this why I can see unfortunately how people get frustrated with young dogs. Eventually Casey calmed down but the first year or so was rough!!!!

Re: Suggestions for people who would like to get a Dog

We adopted Rudy. So we didn't go there to get a pure bread certain kind of dog. We went there to "look". I saw Rudy's sad little face looking at me and I HAD to take him home with me! I couldn't leave him there.

BUT Rudy is a golden Retriever/Chow mix. I didn't know anything about either. Except my friend had a Chow and now has a golden. Her Dog's were calm and not CRAZY or "aggresive"

Now I sometimes think this dog is so bad... What am I going to do. There have been times were I CRY because he is bitting me and jumping all over me and he needs to stop.

The point is I didn't go to the shelter looking for a certain breed. I went there for a dog. I couldn't do research! Chat Icon

Re: Suggestions for people who would like to get a Dog

We adopted my dog from a shelter and we were told she was a lab mix. We wanted a lab mix- life is grand.

My dog is not a lab mix- she is a Dalmation, likely mixed with hound. She barks and howls when playing (hound), she's nervous (Dalmation), and she's snappy when she feels anxious(DEFINITELY Dalmation trait).

I love her- but would have NEVER adopted her had I known she was a Dalmation mix. We knew when we adopted a dog that it would likely be a mixed bag of something, so we were as prepared as we could be I guess.

Her trainer said she will ALWAYS be nervous and that the snapping is a reaction and will likely be something we will always deal with.

We are dealing with Luna. She's a loving, sweet, SMART, (albeit noisy) dog. I pray that when our baby gets here, that we can help her to be comfortable with it. I won't tolerate ANY aggression once the baby is born, so we are doing what we can to prepare her now.

I guess I understand now why people insist on paying hundreds to thousands for a purebreed- at least you KNOW what traits you are getting. We were defiinitely thrown for a loop when her personality turned out to be so shy.

I agree that people need to do their research, but I feel the OP is a repeat of so many others along the same vein. Also, since everyone here is such an advocate of adopting from the shelter, than the whole point of doing research about breed traits is kind of moot- as you NEVER know exactly what you're getting when you adopt.

Sorry so long.....
