Suffolk Neighborhoods?
We are a long way away from buying a home but I want to start getting an idea of what is out there and what areas to look in. I don't want to live in a horrible area but we won't be able to afford anything extravagant. Suffolk is okay (I've noticed it's considerably cheaper) but we want something near the suffolk/nassau border sicne I work in NYC and hubby works in Farmingdale.
Any suggestions? What towns should I be looking at?

Re: Suffolk Neighborhoods?
Lindenhurst is nice. My brother lives there and I carpooled to the Bronx for a while with a woman who lived there. It's long but doable. Houses are reasonable.

Re: Suffolk Neighborhoods?
We live in Holbrook and my DH and I both commute into NYC everyday. Not a bad commute from Ronkonkoma.

Grew up in Commack and loved it.
However, it depends on your budget. Most of the cheaper (all relative of course) houses in Suffolk are further east than the Nassau/Suffolk border.

Lindenhurst...
We're in Lindenhurst and both commute to NYC. When the LIRR is running properly it's not a bad commute at all. Express trains are very nice.
We live in the Village and love it. Feel free to FM any questions.

Re: Suffolk Neighborhoods?
For a decent commute you might want to consider areas near these stations: Hicksville, Ronkonkoma, Huntington. If you can figure out how long you are willing to commute you can work from there. Most Suffolk towns near the Nassau border will be around one hour to Penn/LIC/Brooklyn, add another 15 - 30 minutes as you keep going east. Ronkonkoma has express service though, I think it's an hour, even though it's farther out.

Re: Suffolk Neighborhoods?
When I said commute I meant commute by car! I already leave the house by 6:15-6:30 and with all the train transfers I'd have to get to the hicksville train just after 6am to get to the area in brooklyn that I work at the same time I get there now. Ronkonkoma and places like that are probably too far out.
I just think it's out of reach for us to own a house anytime in the next few years. It is so depressing.

I love it here. Babylon village is nice too if you can find something reasonable. Some of Babylon village gets a little, um, out of hand.
I love West Babylon & so much of our neighborhood is remodelling and updating their homes.

There are direct trains from Ronkonkoma to the LIRR station in Brooklyn. You dont need to transfer...

Re: Suffolk Neighborhoods?
Is your job near the Flatbush LIRR station in Brooklyn? B/c you might get there faster if you take the train rather than drive. Ronkonkoma and I think Hicksville and Huntington have direct service to Flatbush.

I commute to Mineola and my husband commutes to College Point Queens.
It's a great community that is getting younger and younger...

Re: Suffolk Neighborhoods?
The trains that are near my job are the L and M trains. I think the transfers all happen after Jamaica. I've never done it but there is profesional developer who comes to my school monthly who takes the train and the commute is longer then it takes me to drive leaving from the Hicksville train, which is where I would leave from now since I live in Levittown.

Re: Suffolk Neighborhoods?
Another vote for Lindenhurst...we are renting now, but this is where we plan to buy in the coming years. People are nice, houses are decently priced and nice and the commute isn't bad. DH goes to Garden City, takes him about 45 minutes and I go to queens, by Laguardia and it takes me an hour and fifteen miutes TOPS.

Yeah, the L and M are tough. What if you took the LIRR to LIC, then the G to the L?

Lloyd Harbor isn't really an ideal commuting town b/c of how far north it is (it can take quite a while just to get to 25A.) Besides the fact that you probably won't find a home for under 1.5mil.
E. Npt is more ideal b/c it's closer to major roadways and the home prices are w/in reason.
