Stupid question... "O" Egg and BD'ing
I always wondered this (before both kids) but always forgot to ask...
The day you ovulate means when the egg is released, right? So, say if your egg is released at 1pm and you BD that night, is that pointless since the egg was already released? I just didn't think there was enough time for the sperm to meet the egg.

From what I understand you have 12 to 24 hours to "fertilize" the egg after it's released from it's follicle. SO if you ovulate at 1pm and then BD at night, there's still a very good chance you'll fertilize the egg.

That's my understanding too.

yeah, you definitely have time. The egg gets released and is in your body for around 24 hours. When I got pregnant, I had gotten a + on the OPK around 7am and we BD'd later that day around 6pm. So apparently that is fine, since it worked for me

Right, but I have also read that the sperm needs about 12 hours to "mature" enough to actually be able to fertilize an egg, so if you wait too long after actual ovulation, you could miss it.

The sperm does not need to "mature". The spermies are what they are as soon as they leave their "owner". What the sperm does need is a enviroment conducive to fertilization meaning, good quality CM which you usually see a few days prior to ovulation. The sperm themselves are ready to fertilize an egg as soon as they enter the cervix.
Once your egg ruptures and you ovulate the egg is good for about 12-24 hrs. at which point it starts breaking down and conception is less likely. Although you can of course get pregnant the day you ovulate your best bet is to BD at least 2-4 days prior to ovulation. That is also when you will notice your best quality CM. Also, as the sperm takes a while to get to its destination it's best to BD a few days before you "O" since the sperm can live inside your cervix and fallopian tubes for 3-5 days they are basically hanging out and ready as soon as the egg ruptures.

Yeah I was when I read that because I never heard of that.
I'm sure it is better to BD before ovulation, but there definitely still is a high chance of getting pregnant if you BD soon after ovulation.. especially within the first 12 hours.

True. It's just then when you wait until actual ovulation you're contending with having to wait until the sperm travels to where it needs to be and in the meantime the egg can start breaking down. That's why they recommend doing it in the days prior. Of course you can pregnant on "O" day but I always like to cover all my bases and "coat the area" for a few days to give myself every chance of conceiving.

Mature may not have been the right word, I was blanking as to the term used in Taking Charge of Your Fertility. I'll have to see if I can find the part where I read that - I don't want to confuse anyone!

Re: Stupid question... "O" Egg and BD'ing
When you get an LH surge you should O within 24-36 hours. There's no way to determine exactly when the egg is released. That's why it is good to BD within 24 hours because at least the sperm can hang out and wait for the egg. And it's also good to BD as the egg is released and even after because there are fast swmming sperm (boy sperm) and slow swimming sperm that can survive longer in the uterus (girl sperm).
So that is why we BD ASAP after the LH surge because it could happen in 2 hours (depending on when you test) or up to 36 hours.
So complicated!

I think you meant "travel". It takes a few hours for the sperm to travel to their destination (egg). I don't anything that comes from a man would mature.........that would be a first!!
