Stroke under 40
Does anyone know a young person who had a stroke? I would love to hear recovery stories.

Re: Stroke under 40
My friend with sickle cell anemia had a stroke in her 30's but made a full recovery and goes to work every day. Still has crises but that will never stop unfortunately due to the disease.

Yes, I know someone who had a stroke at 28. She made a 100% complete recovery, in a relatively short amount of time. It was quite a long time ago, so I don't really remember all the details of the recovery process, but it was not very long before you would even have a clue that anything had happened

Re: Stroke under 40
My good friend had a stroke at 28. She almost fully recovered in the matter of a year with intense speech and physical therapy. 10 years later, the only thing she struggles with is speech. If she tries to speak too fast, her words get jumbled, and she has to take a minute to collect her thoughts and try again. Other than that, she can read, write, drive a car, count money, and held a job prior to her DD being born. She leads a completely normal life.

Stroke under 40
My aunt had a stoke at 36. This was 25 years ago. It was pretty bad. She never fully recovered. She can't use her left arm and limps badly. She can't talk completely as the left side of her face is also effected. It never slowed her down though. SHe still lived at home, raised my cousin and worked at the bakery she owned decorating cakes. She had LOTS of assertive devices and over time learned what she could and couldn't do. her attitude really made her recovery much better then they thought. Again this was 25 years ago so A LOT has changed! Sadly, last month, she had another massive stroke and will not recover. She knew it could happen again and more then likely would. I don't remember a lot of the 1st stroke but she was in ICU for a long time and in rehab for almost a year.

I used to work as an OT and had quite a few younger patients who suffered a stroke. I saw a lot of really good recoveries. Stay positive, do all your home exercises and try not to get too discouraged. It's a tough process but you have to be strong in the beginning because now is when you will make the most progress. Good luck to you!
