BS like they're really not asking for it, or BS like they're nuts to ask for it?

Teachers got 17% and they have a huge surplus. So while I may not agree I can see where that number is coming from.

Re: Strike spin

I think they wanted an 8% raise, but I could be wrong. With union negotiation, the union demands a lot, but doesn't expect to get everything. It's a process of demands and counteroffers. The more each side asks for, the more they can give up so it appears as if they're making concessions and trying to reach an agreement.

Yes. And the surplus is the MTA's, not the cities. I wasn't clear about that either.

ETA- Though our raise is spread out over a few years.

well i think the teachers deserve it. IMO they are grossly underpaid

My friends DH works for MTA and he gets paid A LOT of money
They get a LOT of benefits
20%...not getting it?

I dont think the teachers got 17%. They got 15% but had extra time added in so it wasnt pure raise. It was probably closer to 11% and then divide that by 3 years. Then the city screwed them by lumping the retro money into 1 check with their regular pay so half was taken out in taxes

Re: Strike spin

The TWU is asking for :

- an 8% raise each year
- a share of the $1 billion surplus
- terrorism training

Source

The MTA has offered 6% over 27 months, but with extra responsibilities like station cleaning and a cut back on the sick time they do have. I didnt see anything that said the TWU wanted unlimited sick time?

I agree with the poster who said unions don't expect to get everything they ask for- it really is a bargaining process.

My father has been a token booth clerk for about 20 years. You're right, Red, the health benefits aren't bad compared to what private companies get, and his salary (IMO) is decent for the work that he does.

The big things as I know them, are maternity leave, pension (I don't know what they currently have) and working conditions. The bathrooms and break rooms are DISGUSTING. There is often no toilet paper, running water in the sink, soap, sanitary napkin dispensers for the women, etc. There are roaches and rats everywhere.

My dad goes so far as to use his "pick advantage" for choosing his station to make sure he is near his apartment. In case he can't make it home, he pees in a container and uses baby wipes and hand sanitizer to wash up. He refuses to use the bathroom in the station unless it is an extreme emergency.

There is a lot of administrative crap too. When I was a kid, and he would call out sick, his supervisor would call every hour to make sure he was home. If he was at the doctors office, they would call and make sure he was really there, and they'd call when he got home, to make SURE he wasn't faking. I'm pretty sure they no longer do that, but that's a good example of how the employees are treated.

If they strike, it will be a big pain in the azz for me, but I understand their need to do it.

i have no idea. the employees have no idea. i spoke to my dad earlier today, and he said the way it works that he goes to work, and if there is strike; his supervisor will come down and tell him to close out the booth. he says he is as in the dark as the average person. Chat Icon Chat Icon

That's a freakin disgrace. No one should have to work in those conditions. I really hope something is done about that.
