strep b test
I just received my medical records from OB's office and as Im reading through the tests, I see for the strep B test that its positive. They never told me and Im a scheduled c-section. Should this go untreated or does this not matter? Im confused here, I was never given any antibiotics or anything. Has this happened to anyone else? If so, what did they do for you?

Re: strep b test
I had to get an antibiotic drip when I delivered. also, after my first, they don't even test me now, they just treat me for it. I would let them know when you go for your section that you tested positive. That's all you have to do. No biggie.

Honestly i'd call and ask why you weren't told. I'd be p*ssed! I just had the strep b test today and my doctor said if it came back positive, i'd be put on antibiotics... so it's nothing too major.

I agree. I'd call up too. When I tested positive, my dr. called me up to let me know and told me that all I'd need to do was remind them that I tested positive when I was going to deliver so they could put me on a drip.
Let us know how it all pans out!

I wouldn't stress yourself out to much. They probably will start you on an IV drip of antibiotics before the c-section, just like they would a natural birth. Two bags of the antibiotics and you'll be good to go.

Re: strep b test
you can't get antibiotics before you deliver. i was just explained this yesterday. if you get it before delivery, the baby will develop an immunity to it and you can't get the second dose. you need 2 doses.
they only treat it when you deliver. it is no big deal if you have the group strep while pregnant as the 2 doses just need to be given after delivery

i honestly don't know. but i had the strep test yesterday so i asked about what would happen if i was positive. that's when he told me. and then he said "i'm sure you're wondering why we don't give you the antibiotics now before he is born" and explained that the baby needs 2 doses and if you got one while pregnant, the baby could become immune to that strain and it wouldn't be effective.
i'm sure i'll have much more to worry about after delivery if i'm positive for strep so i'm going to not think about it at all!

Re: strep b test
I was positive for strep b and it wasn't a big deal at all!
They'll take care of it when you deliver..you'll get antibiotics in your IV and all will be fine!! I think 40% of women test positive for it, so they are very used to dealing with it!

Re: strep b test
With my last two pregnancies I had strep b and as other people mentioned they don't do anything during the pregnancy. It can only affect the baby if your not treated with the antibiotics during delivery. And if having a c-sec you should not need the antibiotics because strep b can only be passed to babies during v-birth. Atleast that is what I have been told by my dr.

i just spoke to the nurse at my OB about this and what you said is exactly what she told me. She also said that sometimes even with a c-section the dr. might still administer the antibiotics anyways and that she would find out for me what my dr. does. Thanks for the responses ladies, i feel better knowing that its not such a big deal after all!

I had a "scheduled" c-section (the day before they scheduled me so it wasnt totally an emergency c/s) and I tested positive for strep B. I got antibiotics in my IV and it was fine.

Re: strep b test
I tested positive & when my water broke they started me on the antibiotics...I was then in labor for over 24 hours & had the IV drip the whole time...I ended up having a cs & had to finish 1 more bag after I delivered.
BTW my incision is fine...no issues
