both mine were on them at 6 mos. they could never get the hang of regular cups...no idea that they have to tilt their heads back to drink.
at 5 mos,i just keep forming their lips around straw, eventually they suck in and the rest is history

Maybe about a year. It took a few months for him to get it. I had to sit by him and hold it down so he didn't tip it back. He really got it when I let him drink from a real straw a few times. MUCH easier than those sippy cup valves.
