Re: Stonybrook Hospital VS. St Charles

Hey there Liz (and/or Ron)

I've had some drama with changing OBs over the past few weeks and made the decision to pick the hospital first. Based on the feedback from the girls on this very choice I decided on St. Charles.

Re: Stonybrook Hospital VS. St Charles

I did not care for Stonybrook back then. But I know alot has changed. My friend used the birthing room at st charles. She loved it there. I imagine if all goes well I will only stay one night if my doc agrees. Sleep so much better at home. But then again I doubt I will get much here either. Chat Icon

I never gave birth at StonyBrook but I have friends and family that have...I recently had to change doctors and I chose St Catherines over StonyBrook.

Re: Stonybrook Hospital VS. St Charles

I am delivering at St. Charles. I was told if either me or the baby are in major trouble, we'll be taken to Stony Brook. So, from what I've been told, Stony Brook is better in emergencies. But St. Charles is better in friendly environment and comfy stay.

Re: Stonybrook Hospital VS. St Charles

One positive for Stonybrook is they allow you to room in with your baby. They also have private rooms, although you share the bathroom. When I asked them if they would allow me to rent my own birthing tub and bring it to the hospital they told me no way.

Re: Stonybrook Hospital VS. St Charles

I LOVED STONYBROOK- after delivering there- I would never want to go anywhere else! I switched Dr's at about 6 months, at which point I chose someone who was affiliated with SB, best decision I have ever made. All hospitals have their good and bad points. I was born in St Charles actually!

My sister was at St Chalres and HATED it- though I know a million people who had wonderful expieriences there. Long story short, the nurse took to long to let the Dr know she was hemmoraging (sp?) and she ended up with a ruptured uterus and blood transfusions.

Re: Stonybrook Hospital VS. St Charles

I delivered at Stonybrook and has a great experience. The practice I use are the attendings on the delivery/materity ward. I didn't think that I would like the fact that it's a teaching hospital but after delivering, I love it. I had so much support in the delivery room; it was fantastic. I had 3 OB doctors, a L&D nurse, 2 nursing assistants all in the room with me. They were such an amazing help. Because of the extra doctors, I didn't need an episotomy (so happy about that), I had someone helping me push, someone rubbing my back, someone with a cold washcloth,etc...I'm sure you get the idea.

The rooms are private and they allow your DH to stay if he wants to. You get a full menu to order breakfast, lunch and dinner. The neonatal doctors see your baby no matter what which I found comforting. They allow you to have the baby with you at all times except when there are nursery rounds.

On the other hand, my sister delivered 3 babies at St.Charles and was very happy but that may be because 2 of her SILs work on the maternity floor.

Re: Stonybrook Hospital VS. St Charles

I delievered at Stony Brook 2 years ago (I was supposed to deliver at St Charles). I had to have an emergency C-Section at 35 weeks so I didn't have a choice in where I could deliver. I have nothing bad to say! and if I do have another baby I will go back to Stony Brook again. The nurses were really nice, they didn't bug my visitors to get out and I liked that I had a private room, just had to share the bathroom (which I didn't have a neighbor so it was great)

I liked Stony Brook. The rooms are small, but private. They have a fairly large menu to order food off of and I found the nurses to be very helpful. My main reason for being there was my midwife, but I really liked that all the rooms are private.

Re: Stonybrook Hospital VS. St Charles

I delivered at St. Charles 6 weeks ago and had nothing but positive experiences. You do have to share a room (if it's slower, you could luck out and not get a roomie, but it was packed when I delivered), but honestly, it wasn't that bad. I barely saw my roomie, I actually wished I got a more friendly roomie so we could just talk a little. But she kept her curtain pulled the whole time.

I've never been hospitalized at all before so I don't have anything to compare it to, but I received excellent care and the doctors and nurses were all friendly and helpful. I liked that it was a smaller hospital, it was more personalized and intimate. I think there are something like 28 labor & delivery beds, that's it, so it's nice and small.

I do believe you can room in with your baby too, I planned on doing it but was so exhausted at night that I welcomed her being taken and kept safely in the nursey (but brought to me for feedings). I think you could keep baby with you overnight though if you wanted.

Good luck!

I had a great experience at St. Charles. It was not busy when I was there so everyone on the floor pretty much had a private room. They only double up if they have to. DS was able to be in the room wih me as much as I wanted. I have no complaints. The nurses were wonderful. The food was decent for hospital food. I was greatful for the strict visiting hours. I needed some alone time with DH and DS to bond and didn't have to ask anyone to leave because they do it for you. Overall, a great evperience. Oh, the delivery rooms were nice too.

Re: Stonybrook Hospital VS. St Charles

I delivered at SB and loved it. Everyone was so nice and accommodating. My doctor through Three Village Women's Health delivered my DD. I was in the L&D room and ended up having a C-Section. I have no complaints and will be going back to deliver #2 in the future. Hope that helps.

Thank you all so much. I need to tour both. I like the idea that Stonybrook might handle an emergency fast or if there is a problem. But then again my friend had her baby at st charles and she was 46. Chat Icon

My friends like St. Charles, but hated that they had to share a room.

StonyBrook you get your own room and the visting hours are more open than St. Charles.

Re: Stonybrook Hospital VS. St Charles

I delivered both boys at St. Charles. They were wonderful. No complaints at all. But with Baby #2 I had some issues and had to go to SB at 32 weeks for a possible emergency section. I was there for a 24 hour stay and all of the drs and nurses were wonderful. Before this experience I did NOT want to deliver at SB but after meeting with so many great people there, I was comfortable with the idea if it was to happen.

Re: Stonybrook Hospital VS. St Charles

I delivered at SB and loved it! I've never been to St. Charles, but the sharing rooms turned me off as well as the visiting hours and the fact that visitors can only see the baby's in the nursery. SB you share a bathroom, which is a little skeevy, but I dealt with it. You can have the baby anytime you want and keep him/her all night. Their room service is awesome. I was so excited to get to actually eat real food after having such a miserable pregancy with my sugar problem. The nurses and staff were great as was my midwife.
