Sticky situations
What do you do when friend A trashes friend B to you? Let's say you are much closer to friend A. Friend A & B are really really close with each other.
Let's assume you agree with what friend A is saying about friend B.
Do you agree with friend A and basically join in the trashfest? Do you defend friend B? Do you just keep your mouth shut and listen and not really agree or disagree because you know that ultimately they are closer with each other than you are to friend A?

I'd go that route.

Re: Sticky situations
This, unfortunately, happens with my group of friends a lot. I try to play devils advocate as best I can with whatever the problem is between my two friends, even if I agree with the situation. And I always tell whomever is trashing to work it out with the other person. We're all pretty good at confronting each other.

Re: Sticky situations
I would stay completely out of it. I would ask the person complaining to respect your friendship with the other person.

Re: Sticky situations
I think sometimes venting to a friend about another is normal But if it is really mean that is different IMO either way if you want to stay friends with both stay out of it.
I have been contemplating this very issue lately. I know someone who badmouthed a few people actually and out of spite i think about telling them...

Re: Sticky situations
I'd like to say that I wouldn't join in but I've never been one to not voice my opinion - good or bad. I would probably balance it out with pointing out Friend B's good qualities.

Re: Sticky situations
This is an ongoing thing... it's not a fight that they are having, I guess it's more of a vent, like Red said. Because it's always like "I love Friend B to death, you know that, but she is such a B!tch because she...blah blah"
That makes it hard to stay out of, because it's constant.

maybe then contront the venting friend and tell her you are not into hearing her badmouth the other friend all the time

Re: Sticky situations
I just listen and do a lot of "uh huh" and "oh I see" and that kind of thing. I try not to take sides whether I agree or not because I don't want it coming back to haunt me later!
