Started EI Services Today

So, DS has a gross motor skills delay. At 1 year he still wasn't crawling, pulling to stand, or cruising. He is now 14 months and has learned to do all of those things on his own.

But, the therapist still has things to work on. He can't stand on his own without holding on to something for balance. When he "walks" while I hold his hands he has uneven steps, uneven cadence and uneven lengths.

She also observed that he is very rough. This has been a concern of mine for a few weeks now. I can practice gentle with him until I'm blue in the face and he still touches very rough. He even hits and bites me now. And when he crawls or tries to walk he is just so loud. Slaps his hands and feet against the floor. She indicated that she believed that perhaps the sensation of being rough might be something that he likes. She referred to it as "proprioceptive input".

It's one thing when he does it to me, but my concern is with other children. He is in daycare. I noticed the other day he was playing ball with another kid. Technically it was Matthew's turn and the other kid who threw the ball came to get it. And Matthew sort of biffed him in the head. Twice. I mean, at this age I don't think they know how to share. And I know he has no way to communicate. But felt bad for the kid because he started to cry. I truly don't think that hit hurt him but he still shouldn't have to be hit. But I know that Matthew is strong and big enough to hurt and I dread the one day I get that incident report that he hurt someone. I just don't want him to be a bully. Any advice on this or do I just need to accept that this is his nature?

Ugh, always something to worry about. What if this and what if that. I feel need to chill.

I don't really have advice, I just wanted to offer Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon .

My son is in EI for speech and special instruction for 6 months now. It is a wonderful thing that you are doing for your son. You are getting him the help he needs, and you will see how amazing the progress can be with EI.

Good luck!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Hi Lisa! I think that it's great that you are doing e/i and they will work with him to correct issues. But he might just not have any concept of making nice yet. It doesn't sound too uncommon. I know that Sophie is rough and I have had people refer to it in that she is craving sensory input. Is that similar to what your therapist is saying? I've been told OT helps that. I don't really have any advice except to offer you hugs. We're not doing PT but you know my situation. {{hugs}}

My son is a "sensory-seeker" as well. Has he had an OT eval? Do you know anything about Sensory Processing Disorder? You can FM me for more info.
Good Luck!

not to much that he craves sensory output but that he enjoys it. And by being rough he achieves that (the feeling of hitting things, not just people. Or how he just drops to hit butt from a standng position.

She did ask about OT but I wasn't sure why. I'll ask her next week. We're doing it once per week.

he was evaluated on all areas upon the initial meeting. Nothing other than gross motor skills, which was the reason I called, was flagged. I'm going to do some research but am interested in more info. Thanks so much!
