SS disability
so we know (as I just posted) that I suck at using the search feature. I just tried again and failed. Sooo here I am asking again. Some months ago someone talked about SS disability and how to get it or maybe they worked there once or perhaps was a ssd lawyer at some point. Any of this sound familiar? I ask because I am having a hard time gettig approved and I am looking for direction as to what to do.

Do you have a lawyer? My Mom is trying to get it-she lives in GA(close to you) but maybe can get a referral for you. They do not get paid unless you get approved. I can't see why you wouldn't??

Re: SS disability
I don't have one, but seconds before I just reopened this I thought maybe I should. I am having a hard time getting social security diability...I don't get it. A 30 year old with a rare cancer in a unique spot gets cancer, losses vision, losses sight, get's a heart disability and takes the legal limit of radiation...all the while not being infection free in 7 months and I can't get approved? WTFF? What does it take than? I just don't get it

Re: SS disability
Deb, I wish you all the best with this. I'm hoping of course my brother has an easier time but I can see that it may be a fight.
Good luck with this. Definitely get a lawyer asap. I hear it can take up to a year to get a hearing.

Re: SS disability
i work for ss but i really am not sure how that works. . . i do know that if you get a lawyer you only have to pay if you win the case and they *usually* get 25% of your back pay ( from the time the disability started ) sometimes they can fight for more though.
good luck - feel free to FM if you have more specific questions . . . I can ask around!

Re: SS disability
I would recommend getting a lawyer. DH was approved for it for only 1 year! He suffered a TBI in June 05 and we recently hired a lawyer to help him get approved again. It's a pain in the @ss and in our opinion worth paying a lawyer. Good Luck!

Get a lawyer.
My mom has a great one. She filed in November I believe, and she still hasn't heard. It can take a while.
Good Luck.

I stopped up at the cancer center today and the woman was SOO helpful! She said they deal with SS all the time and tomorrow when I meet with her again she will give me some tips. It's soo nice to find someone who WANTS to help

Re: SS disability
Get a SS/Disability lawyer. It can only help.
My brother has been fighting his case for years first w/o a lawyer but now with a lawyer. My grandpa (deceased now) got his in under 6 months with a lawyer from the beginning. One of DH's brothers has been fighting his case for a little over a year and his check is allegedly starting soon. The SS clerk told DH that about 1 year is considered "fast" - but that may be just NYC.

Re: SS disability
Holy crap. First I was mad for my story, now I am mad for all these stories. Why is one year acceptable as "fast?" People are out of work, running up medical bills and in need of this money. One year would never be acceptable in a business world, why is it acceptable for the government?
I can honestly say if it were for friends, family and people from this site I would be seriously up a creek without a paddle! I am lucky to have generous people in my life but what if I wasn't? What if I needed that money to buy my son food? I am seriously pizzed about this. This is the second cause I am going to take up WHEN I get better.

Re: SS disability
Deb...I am a SSD attorney. I work with my father who has been an SSD attorney for a very very long time. I've probably posted about it in the past, but I usually erase it or prefer to do things via FM.
I'd be happy to answer any questions that you might have, and get you a referral in the state that you live in (I don't believe you live in NY?).
Just send me an FM. I have a busy day today, but I'll get back to you during the evening.

Part of the reason for the problem you are seeing is that Social Security is not a sexy topic for politicians to address and becasue the Social Security Administration does not receive the funding that it needs to function properly. They are cutting staff at a time when the population is aging and there are more retirement and disability claims. Even if you talk to your own friends, many know so little about funding for a program that can help them if they become disabled. They know about the trust fund but not much, and they usually know nothing about about funding for staff at SSA. As some people here know, I have worked on both sides.

Why did you have to pay? All DH's records were requested through Social Security and we didn't have to pay anything.
