spoiling a newborn??

Ok..so i mentioned today that our GI doc said having the baby sleep on my chest is a bad habit to get him out of now.(he's a week old today and colicky at nites).

he wont stay in the bassinet long, even when swaddled as he wakes himself up in a crying fit. The GI dr. said to let him cry...let him know we are there and havent abandonded him, try to soothe him, but ultimately leave him in the bassinet. I dont know--im torn. I have to ask the pediatrician about this.

during the day he eats, maybe gets a bit fussy but tends to fall asleep until his next feeding. the nite comes and the colic starts. I do have it down now where i get him up on me and rock him in the glider and he calms down pretty quickly and back to sleep.

is there such a thing as spoiling a newborn. I feel llike this is the time where he should be held, comforted and it will kill me tonite to try to get him in the bassinett and hear him scream. i'll be crying too :(

I am sorry but your GI doc sucksChat Icon You should not let a one week old baby cry - if they cry pick them up. They are crying for a reason - its the only way they know how to communicate with you right now.

Could you try wearing the baby in a sling?

Please dont listen to your GI doc - he or she is totally wrong on this matter.

That is ridiculous advice for your doctor to give. You have a nb and a nb in pain and he says to let him cry? Assss in my opinion.

Hold him, cuddle him, let him sleep on you. Whatever works in the beginningChat Icon Chat Icon

I know he's not in pain..its the colic. but i do pick him up, rock him, soothe him etc..then try to get him back in his bouncy or even the car seat b/c he seems to like that..LOL.

The GI doc said the sleeping part we're spoiling him. but im like..gees he's a week old..not 4 KWIM?

i have a baby bjorn carrier but i think babies need to have good neck control for that right? im not sure if i should put a 1week old in that. but u know in a few weeks now that im home on leave, i may try that around the house.

My niece was a colicy baby and she slept on my sister's or he husbands chest for about the first 6 weeks of her life. Once she passed the colic stage they had NO problems transitoning her to her crib. Her PED told her that colicy babies often turn out to be the best babies BECAUSE they get cuddled and held so much as newborns. I would not listen to the GI doc says at all, you cannot spoil a newborn.

I don't think you can spoil a newborn. They are so tiny and need to be held.

Re: spoiling a newborn??

what is causing his colic? Does he have acid reflux?

poor thing, I say hold him all you can but I know with KJ, he would cry even when I held him so I would hold him and let him cry and try to soothe him

we thought it was reflux but it seems to be more of a milk allergy/sensitivity so we have him on allimentum now (since yesterday) and seems to be doing better with it. HOwever, we'll see how tonight goes.

I love holding him on my chest and it calms him down pretty easily.

thanks ladies!

Re: spoiling a newborn??

Diana - keep in mind that for a newborn, having colic is the same ting as being in pain. he's uncomfortable and needs you to comfort him. if that means letting him sleep in the infant carrier swing, or on you, that's perfectly okay Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: spoiling a newborn??

My ped said that newborns can't be spoiled! He also said to never let my ds have a real full blwon crying fit at this age...I little bit of whining here and there, but letting them get themselves really worked up will just make them physically feel worse. I will soothe and hold my baby when he is crying because he only really cries when he has gas pains, but ultimitaly put him down to go to sleep. There are times he sleeps on my chest but I try not to make a habit out of it bc I'm afraid of falling into a deep sleep!

Re: spoiling a newborn??

As I said in your other post, your GI doctor is wrong. You cannot spoil a newborn. Some babies need to be held a lot. They spent 9 months nice and snuggled in your womb. It makes sense that they want to be held and feel secure. You're not forming bad habits. Newborns are not capable of self soothing. Letting them CIO doesn't teach them anything. By responding to their cries, you help build a trust relationship.

DS wanted to be held 24/7 as a newborn. He slept in my arms b/c he'd get hysterical if I put him down. He became more independent by 3 months. It was tough, but that was what he needed.
