Spinoff: WWYD if your older CHILD doesn't like the name?

Spinoff to mother and MIL not liking baby's name...

My 6 year old daughter thinks that if we have a boy and name him Benjamin, that people in school are going to make fun of him.

She tells me, "Mom, I go to school! I know what kids are like!"

She said they are going to call him "Big Ben" and make Clock noises.

I told her to get over it, and that Mommy and Daddy get to pick the name.

But literally she was crying over it.

Do I just ignore her wishes completely? I feel like it is DH and I's decision, not hers...but should I take her opinion seriously?

LOL, your daughter is funny. She may very well be right and they will call him Big Ben, but Benjamin is a great name and it should not deter you from naming him that. Kids can make fun of ANY name, but you as an adult know what names will carry well through life and those that won't. Benjamin is a strong, classic name. I personally would ignore her and tell her that it's you and DH's decision to make.

Just curious- what does she want to name him? I bet you could make up funny names that he would be called from her suggestions.

Haha my old math teacher was Benjamin and his son also a teacher was Benjamin. They were called Big Ben and Little Ben at school. Sorry but your daughter is right.

I love the name Ben though.

I would still go with what you like. Maybe you can have her help to pick a middle name.

The name that DH and I agree upon is Benjamin Joseph. I have always loved the name Ben and Joseph was my Dad, who passed away just this October.

Emily's name of choice if she has a little brother is Joseph William, which would be my Dad's first name and DH's first name!

I am torn. Part of me thinks that you and DH should go with what you believe and the other part of me feels like why not go with DD's choice especially being it honors her grandfather and father. Maybe look up the meanings of all the names and see which one has a stronger more meaningful meaning?

My son is Benjamin and I adore that name! I think you should go with what you and your DH decided.

And listen, you better tell your daughter that there will be a time in her life when she will learn that there are FAR worse things for a boy than being called BIG BEN! KWIM?
