Spinoff: What do you consider "Country"
In the "Country/City" thread, I noticed that people have different ideas of what "country" is.
To me, country means each person has at least a few acres of property, and there are areas where you can drive for several miles and not see a building.

To me, in the country open land/farms far outweigh development. My husband grew up in the country - the only place to work in high school were the local farms, they had to drive 1/2 to get to a McDs, 45 min. to a major shopping center. His parents had a small lot at 5 acres.
I grew up in suburbia we had subdivisions that ranged from 1/3 acre lots to 5 acre lots and there were farms and orchards on the outskirts of town, but still no matter where you were you could be to a mall/McDs/gas station in under 10 min. (usually under 5 min.)

I don't consider suburbia as the country. Although I could understand "City people" may think that.
Criteria for being "country"
- No access to MAJOR City
- Insfrastruture (roads, etc..)
- Transportation system (Train, subway)
- Museums
- In the middle of "nowhere"
For me NC, TN, Vermont... that's the country.

Yes, this is what I consider true country, acres of land per home, etc.
But in terms of LI, I would say many parts of Suffolk are closer to "country" than Nassau/the boros.
If you compare Manhattan to parts of Suffolk county, it's a pretty drastic comparison, hence leading to the feeling that Suffolk (although just really the suburbs) can feel like country compared to true city areas.
So in LI terms, I would say "country" is having an acre or so.

I consider country rural areas i.e. Eastern Long Island (farm country) and even parts of my areas (Yaphank, etc.). Spaced out properties, open area, limited development, etc.

I don't consider anything on LI country. To me country was when I lived upstate and had to drive an hour for shopping and every house was a farm.
I think a few acres per person is country.

This is what I consider country, very few houses and lots of open space. This is actually where my husband works...at the television mast on the top of the hill...
But not to worry, there is a football stadium and a shopping mall at the bottom of the hill...
So it all balances out...
