spinoff to splitting the bill...
when you go out with a group are you more or less likely to order an alcoholic drink with dinner?
because DH and i often go out, and we nearly always split the bill, we often find ourselves ordering fewer drinks than we would if we were just out by ourselves, to keep the cost of the bill down.
ETA: the same goes for appetizers. usually DH an i follow the lead of the other people we are eating with to see if we should order one or not, to keep things "fair" and make splitting the bill easier.

Same here, but we really don't drink and neither do our friends. Usually if we have a drink it's because everyone at the table decides they want a glass of wine so we order a bottle.

when we go out with couples or friends and we split the bill, I try to keep in mind what we are ordering. DH tends to order more expensive meals and more drinks than me which in turn makes me order less.

We order whatever we want whether we are with or without the company.
If we are clearly eating and/or drinking more we always insist on paying more. We are very aware of this and sometimes especially when we are with my single friends, my SO just pays for everyone...he loves doing that and everyone treats him in other ways.

I tend to order more drinks when we are with friends- because they do- and I figure if they are having more drinks and we are splitting the bill, I might as well too!

We will usually discuss it first if we want appetizers or not. DH almost always gets a beer when we go out with people. I will get an alcohlic drink only if I'm in the mood for one, then I usually order a regular soda when my meal comes.

If everyone else is ordering drinks, then I do to - too many times I have not, and then wound paying 25-30 dollars for my $10 meal, because everyone else ordered drinks.

We ware there to enjoy each other's company and have a good time. If I'm worried about cost, then I would rather have people over to my home and cook or order in.

I also want to say - if that's the case - where going out has to differ when going out with a group or just together...perhaps it's not the best idea to be going out in the first place. Going out is strictly that - "going" and being "out" to enjoy yourself and not have to restrict yourself for any reason.

I order whatever I feel like eating or drinking. I don't go by what everyone else orders. If I had more to eat or drink, I will lay out more money to cover the cost of anything additional.
