Spinoff to Spinoff on Being Greener: CF Lightbulbs

Okay, I have a spinoff to the previous discussion. I agree our environment is a mess, do believe global warming is a reality, and feel concerned about the future of our enviroment. I try to do what I can to help, though there are some things, I admit, I do not do.

But are some things that are supposed to be great for the environment really better?

A lot of people mention CF lightbulbs. We converted to those recently, thinking it was a small change we could easily make that would benefit the environment.

But, I read the back of the packaging recently and noticed they contain mercury, and you are supposed to contact a special agency to find out how to dispose of them safely. This also freaked me out if they break, esp. since we have an infant in the house.

So, is CF really better?

I'm starting to use them, and honestly, I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that there is a way to recycle them before they start burning out in my house.

I think the mercury problem may greatly outweigh any energy/pollution savings we've gained. Chat Icon

I don't know about other towns but the Town of Smithtown recycles CFL's.

I'm hoping by the time they burn out, which is years based on normal usage, there will be better procedures for recycling them.

I worried about breakage too. But then I tried to remember the last time I broke a light bulb. And I honestly can't remember.

I've been using CFL's in my terrariums and orchidarium. The first one burned out after 30,000 hours over 6 years. And that was after being on for 14 hours a day, every day.
