Re: Spinoff to spending $100 on groceries
i stock up on mozz cheese and panko bread crumbs when on sale. So we make chicken cutlets in oven at least once per week... sometimes will make it chicken parm with some cheese and sauce. I also stock up on canned tomatos and we make our own tomato sauce. DH makes his own BBQ sauce so we use that for pulled pork, hamburgers, etc
I try to buy stuff we use weekly like pasta, rice, ground beef when its on sale.
Waldbaums does buy one get one on ground beef like once a month and I stock up.
We also have always done breakfast for dinner once per week since we started dating... we plan to keep it a ritual when DS is old enough for solids
I have really tired to cut back on my small shopping trips and have enough in the house for all the meals we need for a week or two... it has helped me

Try making a meatless meal once a week, also agree w/ breakfast for dinner once a week. What kind of chicken do you buy. We buy mostly skinless, boneless thighs. This gives me so much flexibility for so many dishes and at $3.99/lb for organic, it makes dishes inexpensive as well. We don't eat shrimp often, but when we do, I usually do a stir fry which allows me to bulk it up with veggies, rice, egg and to get away with just a pound of shrimp.

Re: Spinoff to spending $100 on groceries
i try to catch whole chickens on sale (like 79 cents/pound) because that is a super cheap meal that lasts. roast the chicken and you get dinner with homemade gravy and the makings for chicken noodle or rice soup, which knocks out a good portion of lunch for the week.
when we're scrimping (like when we paid for our wedding) we do breakfast for dinner once a week. i love this because i don't like a heavy breakfast, but for dinner i feel like i can splurge more since it's a bigger meal. homemade pancakes, omelets, etc. are very cheap dinners.
when canned tomatoes go on sale, buy a bunch and make a ton of sauce. freeze some, eat some. pasta is super cheap, and with a loaf of bread, it's a meal. sauce from the freezer can also be a great way to use leftover meats.

Check out Food Network Magazine and the show "5 Ingredient Fix" on Food Network. Both have lots of GREAT recipe ideas and many of them (especially the show) are VERY, VERY cheap but super delicious!!! I highly recommend both!!..........I've never been disappointed with anything I've made.
