Spinoff to pull-ups: night training
How do you night train if your dc still goes A LOT overnight?
DS (3 y/o) is fully potty trained during the day, but is no where near night trained. He goes to bed around 8:30ish, so we limit fluids after 6pm/dinner time (we only let him have about an inch of water after that time if he's complaining that he's very thirsty & that's not very often). We make him go potty right before he goes to bed and he still manages to fill his pull-up up to the point of leaking 3-4x a week! I'm talking drenched PJ tops & bottoms. Oh and he doesn't wake up when it happens, so we only find out when he gets up at 7am. If we put him to bed without a pull-up at this point it will be a disaster. Any thoughts? Ideas? Advice? Thanks

Spinoff to pull-ups: night training
We plan to bring her potty into her bedroom, and to lay a pad under her. We will have her sleep in just a pj top. Try not to have him wear wool or fleece as they wick pee away and don't get damp. Other then that we plan to go in there when we get up to potty and ask her if she needs to go. We get about 2-3 days where she is dry in the morning so we're getting close.

Re: Spinoff to pull-ups: night training
Everything I read said that being able to hold it all night is a physical development that takes a little while as opposed to just being able train them. That being said, I would jut stick with the pull-ups at night right now.
My DD was fully potty trained during the day in less than 3 days and while she was *usually* dry in the morning she did have some wet days for a while. (she was never a night pooper ) I would say we finally ditched the pull-ups at night a few months after she was trained during the day. Week after week she would wake up consistently dry and even call us at night to take her to the potty to pee, at that point we knew she didn't need them anymore.
There is no rush so if he still needs the pull-ups at night, use them. No harm in it. I've never seen a grown up stick his pull-ups on before bed so at some point it will all come together. Good luck.
ETA - We also kept a waterproof, washable pad under her too this way if she had an accident it was super easy to clean up at night.

Good luck! He's in cotton PJs, but that's a really good point about wool & fleece, so I'll make sure that we stick with cotton. We do have a pad under him so luckily his mattress is still ok

Re: Spinoff to pull-ups: night training
Thanks Hofstra - I've heard the same thing about his probably not being physically ready yet. I just sometimes worry that with the fail-safe he won't ever learn. There's a child in my extended family that still wets the bed sometimes at 7 & their mom swears it's because she kept them in pull-ups for too long, so that's always in the back of my mind...
We were lucky in that I had him fully pee & poop trained in a week (using a variation of the 3 day plan), but in his almost 3 1/2 years he has NEVER had a single night waking up completely dry & like I mentioned, he doesn't even wake up when he's wet...at this point I wonder if we'll ever get there or if he'll be the first grown up in a pull up lol I guess I'll give it a few more months and then see where we are then...

Re: Spinoff to pull-ups: night training
i am in the same boat though DD is only 25 months.
She is fully potty trained during the day but at night not so much.
My daughter barely drinks that much during the day and she still pees so much. if i hear her stir at all i go in and take her to the bathroom.
we did the 3 day potty training so we used no pullups not even at night. I have been doing lots of laundry
i double layer her sheets (waterproof mattess protector between each set of sheets) and sometimes i use pads so i dont have to change the sheet but it doesnt always work since she moves around a lot.
even if she gets up to pee she still will wet the bed and its a lot it baffles me where it all comes from since she is not a big drinker and we stop drinks 2 hours before bed.

Re: Spinoff to pull-ups: night training
My twins are 4. they are still waking up wet. DD had a stretch where she was waking up dry so we decided she was ready, but then had two accidents within 4 days, so back into pullups she went. I figure when they are ready, they are ready. They've been potty trained during the day since they were 2.5.

Re: Spinoff to pull-ups: night training
DD is almost 3.5 she finally isnt wetting the bed.
It was months of wet at 5am a couple times a week.
Except she doesnt realize it when she pees ( cause its warm I guess) give it 2 hours when pjs/bed/sheets are soaking wet and cold, thats when she calls me.
I used Goodnights overnights they worked good. THey hold more than the pullups. Should have bought them sooner.

Re: Spinoff to pull-ups: night training
DD#1 was night trained with 5 days of being day trained. She ditched her nighttime pull ups and never had an issue again. DD#2 was day trained at 26 months. I didn't get rid of the nighttime pull ups for about 4 months after. For her, she would wake up dry for 2 weeks so I would take them away she would do okay for 3 days then have an accident every night. So we went back to them and she stayed dry for a month tried it again and she was fine for a week. Then had issues again. Asked the ped who said night training is a physical thing and unlike day training not all kids can hold it all night until between ages 3-5. Some kids also don't wake easily when they do have to go. The next time I tried about 6 weeks later it stuck and has only had 2 accidents at night both turned out she was sick onetime with a uti so there was a reason.
I wouldn't stress the night training I would say use the nighttime pull ups. Keep limiting the late drinks, I do potty at bath, then remind them one last time before tuck in. When they wake up dry for a week try ditching them then.

Re: Spinoff to pull-ups: night training
I kept ds in a night diaper until he was consistently waking up dry. It happened when we moved him from the crib to the bed. He just started waking up dry and then we said no more night diapers and he hasn't had an accident at night.

Spinoff to pull-ups: night training
My DS is 4 and he still wets at night if we let him sleep straight through. We took him out of the pull ups because it was like a crutch for him and he wanted to be a big boy and stay dry. He goes to bed around 8 or 8:30pm. We have a potty in his room and we wake him to pee before we go to sleep usually around 10:30 or 11pm. When we do this he will be dry in the morning about 95% of the time. We will keep doing this until he starts to wake up on his own.

My Son was the same way. Then all of a sudden he started walking up dry. It's not about training, it's about being physically ready. It happened out of no where.

Re: Spinoff to pull-ups: night training
Our 3 year old goes to the bathroom around 7 - 7:15pm for the night right before bed & we wake him & take him to the bathroom when the baby wakes to eat- usually around 5:30-5:45am. He then goes right back to bed. Maybe you can try something like that so it's not such a long stretch. I can barely hold it for 12 hours, I can't imagine that my 3 year old can.

Spinoff to pull-ups: night training
Thanks so much for your input & advice everyone!
The suggestion about waking him up to go seems like a good idea, but I'm worried that I'd ruin his sleep for the night/mess up his sleep patterns so I'm not going to try that. He doesn't nap during the day anymore so I don't want to risk ruining his nights. At this point I'm going to just keep him in his pull-up for a while longer & then see where we're at when he turns 4 in Sept. Thanks again!
