newday-that was a great post to shed a different light.

When I voted, I was moved. Grandparents brought their grandchildren...people were crying.

So many African Americans were registering that night.

IF nothing else, I hope this is a new wave in who comes to vote.

Re: spinoff to post "nonsense at polling lcoations" re: race and voting for Obama

I honestly believe that yes, many african-americans are voting for Obama simply because he's black.

I try to put myself in the shoes of an African-American voter, and I can't say with much certainty that I wouldn't do the same thing. What an AMAZING thing to have a black man FINALLY run for the highest office in the world. I would probably vote for him too, just because I COULD.

It's just an added bonus that he's the right man for the job. Chat Icon Chat Icon

race is absolutely playing a big role in this election.

and when Obama wins (b/c it's obvious that he will), expect racism to have the largest presence it ever had.

anyone who doesn't agree with Obama will be called a racist.

I think it would be naive to think race was not involved.

people are more interested in things when they can relate.

if they think Obama will play favorites, people would be sadly mistaken.

if his record as President of the Harvard Law Review is any indication, Homie don't play that.

Re: spinoff to post "nonsense at polling lcoations" re: race and voting for Obama

Of course race is playing a role in this election.
I mean, it's the first time an African American is running for president of the US.

Of course there are minorities that are voting for Obama based solely on race.

There are those who are voting against him based solely on race.

Obama acknowledged both on 60 minutes about 5 weeks ago.

Any AA person who believes that they will no longer be "arrestable" if Obama is elected president is delusional and should not be taken seriously, just as any white person who believes that Obama will "punish" white people if he is elected president is also delusional. Sadly, both types of delusional people exist.

Re: spinoff to post "nonsense at polling lcoations" re: race and voting for Obama

I think some black voters will vote for Obama because of his color.

But white voters will vote for McCain because he is white and I am sure they don't know much what his policies/views are.

There are uninformed people in both camps. Not just black people.

ETA: people will always vote for who they feel they relate to best. That's not new. It just happens that a candidate is black and some black people may feel more connected to him for X Y Z reason.

According to something I saw on the news, more black people are voting in this election than ever before and primarily for Obama.

Do you think some black people (who are not necessarily politics savvy or people who have never voted before) are voting for Obama just b/c he is black?

I have seen many interviews on TV where they are interviewing black people and it seems like that is the only reason b/c the people interviewed didn't know anything about his policies. DH works in a primarily black area and more than once when he has arrested someone they have said to him "arrest me now b/c once Obama gets elected you won't be able to arrest me anymore". Chat Icon

Just curious what your thoughts are.

It amazed me how many people have a question about people voting just because he's black.. when no one questions women voting for Palin just because she's a woman.. and no one questions people who WON'T vote for Obama just because he's black.. but just to answer your question.. there are a lot of things that happen just because you're black..

We were denied the right to vote JUST because we're Black..

We are pulled over on the highway JUST because we're Black..

We are denied jobs, loans, and houses JUST because we're Black

So when we have a brilliant Candidate for president who is BLACK YEP! I am voting for him JUST because he's black..this is historic..

and the fact that I agree with his policies is the icing on the cake. I will admit without shame or fear that I am HAPPY, THRILLED, ECSTATIC that a Black man will be the next president of the United States.. but it is not only because he's Black.. he's also qualified.. The same ardent support would not be provided if it was Flava Flav running..

I voted for Obama because I believe in his policies and the vision he has for his country. But am I happy that the man I voted for was Black? Heck yeah! When I voted I reflected on my ancestors who had to fight to even get the right to vote and who were beaten and killed to get that right. I am very proud to see this day and I'm sure that is what alot of Black people were thinking about today.

I am not Black but I can see how this would be like having your cake and eating it too!(stupid expression but the only thing I could think of) Only a few decades out of segregation, slavery, etc. an intelligent, eloquent savvy person with great ideas who also happens to be black-hells yeah! I voted for him White and if I was Black I would have voted for him tooChat Icon

Yes, I think there is still ignorance that judges a qualified candidate on the color of his/her skin.

My co-worker, who is a black woman, campaigned her butt off for & voted for Hillary in the primaries. She said she's voting based on their policies & platforms. Yes, there is a certain sense of satisfaction to finally have a black candidate that was well-qualified. She also pointed out that she didn't vote for Sharpton because she thought he was an idiot.

As Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said...
"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."

people are saying this is his dream come to fruition, but I disagree.

it's ALMOST his dream, but until EVERYONE is voting based on beliefs and not skin, we won't be there yet.

I can definitely see WHY this is such a source of pride for African Americans..and why it should also be a source of pride for ALL Americans.

We are not there yet...but my goodness how far we have come! Chat Icon Chat Icon

So many African Americans were registering that night.

CBS was reporting that 600,000 (not a typo) new african-american voters registered in either North Carolina or Georgia (I can't remember which).

They also mentioned a county -- a county -- that had over 50,000 new voters.

Why weren't they registered in 2000? in 2004? Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
