Spinoff to Missing Work b/c of snow

I understand if you work for a small company or a school that it doesn't count as a day off, but what if you work for a big company?

My company is pretty big. My boss works in the Rochester office so when we get snow they laugh at us... they're used to a ton of snow. I once couldn't make it to work and had to take a "sick" day.
I do plan on bringing my laptop home. Just b/c this office I work at is closed doesn't mean the company is closed.

Anyone else have this problem?

My office will more than likely be open in the morning and then dismiss people early if they want to leave. My boss works out of NJ most days so we're used to working remotely. I will more than likely work from home so I can still get stuff done and not have to drive in. Is that an option for you?

I think it is very poor of a place like Rochester laughing at the concept of snow here. We don't get the snow they do so we aren't as equipped to handle it.

That was like Obama laughing at DC when they got snow that first time. He compared it to Chicago. Chat Icon How is that even close?

Sort of...

I am not sure why, but our office never closes, ever. I work for Nassau County but I am in law enforcement (not police) so that might have something to do with it.

I have to take a sick day tomorrow, I have no choice - well, I could take unpaid leave but who wants to do that? Chat Icon

Our office will be open tomorrow. Regardless how much snow is out there.

Snow days are really unproductive days. No one is working, so its so ridiculous that they make you risk the commute to come in.

Unless the mayor closes the city down I am coming in.

Re: Spinoff to Missing Work b/c of snow

yep. My office RARELY closes for weather.

Most management lives either in the city or on the Metro North Line, so they usually have little problem getting into the office.

I stopped breaking my arse to get into the office during really bad weather, then wondering how the heck I was going to get home. No way do I let my safety be compromised. I travel by express bus into the city, use LIRR as a backup.

I now have a company laptop that I keep at home, so I can work from there. I'm taking home some files tonight to be prepared.

If the office remains open for the whole day, then I will take a sick day.
If it closes part of the day, then I will not take any time off since I will have worked from home.

I always try to make it in if I can, and then leave early. Not sure what I will do tomorrow. I'll be more productive at home, vs. 2-3 hours commuting each way.

Only rationale for trying to make it in is that there's always that one schmo from east bumblef*ck LI that makes it in, making the rest of us look bad Chat Icon Chat Icon

My husband is FDNY EMS, they don't miss work ever.

I am having bad anxiety about him driving from Suffolk to Brooklyn and where he is going to sleep if he can't get home.Chat Icon

I work for a major hospital. We don't close, ever. I'm campaigning for a blessing to take a sick day tomorrow but I'm expected to be in. I just don't know how I'm supposed to get home once I get here ...

We don't ever close. I bet if we had 5ft of snow I'd still have to use a PTO. Chat Icon

The industry I work in does a lot of stuff with government offices in DC. They've been closed since Friday afternoon so needless to say I can't get a lot done that I need to.

I do have a company laptop and one of those secure passes so I will be taking that home tonight.

Re: Spinoff to Missing Work b/c of snow

I doubt the company will close...in 10 years I have never seen them do that because of weather.

In my group, we're just telling people to try to make it in if they can. Most people wont make it, and it will just be considered a quote unquote "work from home" day.

Re: Spinoff to Missing Work b/c of snow

We dont' have snow days.
It could be a raging blizzard and the office is open.
If you can't make it in-fine- but you are expected to work from home or take a personal day.
I hate wasting my personal days so I have never had a real snow day where I can sit and watch TV
I work like i always do- just from my house.

Re: Spinoff to Missing Work b/c of snow

I work for a very large well known company. They do put out an 800# usually the day before a big a storm for us to call in because they will close office locations on a case by case basis based on the weather.

99% of the company has laptops though and can very easily work from home.

Re: Spinoff to Missing Work b/c of snow

according to my boss he will be in tomorrow. i on the other hand refuse to come in. i live in queens and work in brooklyn and there's no way i'm driving tomorrow. i'll be more then happy to work from home. even if he tells me to leave early tomorrow, it's pointless to me. i can work from home and get more done then i will driving into the office and leaving early.

Re: Spinoff to Missing Work b/c of snow

my office never closes. I made it clear to my mgr when it snows, I'm not coming in. one year there was as storm, they didnt' let us leave early even though we all asked repeatedly. I wound up skidding through a stop sign w/ my 4 month old in the car never again! after that episode, My whole mentality changed, effffffffff you!!! mgr doesn't care whether we get home safe, than I don't care if I call out on one of the busiest days of the year ( which I have) be mad at me Chat Icon
