spinoff to LIRR seating etiquette question...personal space?
Ok, a few scenarios, the likes of which happen to me pretty regularly:
I'm sitting in the doctors office the other day. There is a row of about 5 empty chairs next to me. A woman comes and sits down in the chair directly next to me.
I'm on the treadmill at the gym, with 2 or 3 open treadmills on either side of me. Someone comes and uses the one directly next to me.
Now if it were you , would you sit down right next to me, or would you leave some room? I admit that I might need more personal space than most, but I guess not everyone thinks that way? This is something that drives me insane.

I would choose seats away from you. It drives me crazy when people do this in the bathroom.
Stall 1, 2, 3 & 4 are available. If I'm in stall 1, you can opt for 3 or 4.

I am with you on this one! I can't stand when people invade my personal space. If there are several open seats/treadmills why take the one closest to me?? People are strange.

In the dr's office, I'd pick the seats away from people.
At the gym, I prefer a treadmill in front of the window, even if I am right next to someone.

I can't stand that either - why do people have to sit so close? It's not like I'm going to acknowledge (except for glaring at you) or talk to you so please leave me alone.

Re: spinoff to LIRR seating etiquette question...personal space?
i would never sit right next to anyone if there were other seats available. I hate it when pple do it to me on NJ transit...or if im standing in a car on the subway and the whole car is empty they stand right up on top of me..un real.
there can be a whole empty car and im in the window seat of a 2 seater and someone comes and sits next to me. Sheesh...
same thing with the ladies room..we have 8 stalls 4 on each side...sometimes i go in and im the only one and someone else comes in right next to me..u have 7 other stalls to choose from...

The worst is when you're at the beach, when it's not crowded, and someone has to set their blanket up on top of yours.

What about in a movie theater? You get there early. You pick seats, get all comfy. 198 seats left in the theater, and the next bunch of people walk in, sit directly in front of you, in back of you, or right next to you and ask you to move your coat. Seriously??!!!???

this is me exactly. in a waiting room or other open seating situation, i will pick a seat away from other people.
at the gym, i care more about where i am located in terms of the television and the window. if i means i take the treadmill right next to someone else, i will. that doesn't bother me at all.

I agree about the dr office. But at the gym sometimes I just like a particular machine so if it's available I use that one.

I always leave room unless you can't. Some people need more personal space than others. I am not neurotic but that is why I really don't like flying. Not bc of the fear of flying, I just can't stand being so cooped up with people.
