I think we should move away from the inflammatory rhetoric that Palestinians don't care about human life or their children. First I hear that Palestinians are the victims and Hamas is the enemy and then I hear they don't care so why should anyone else care how many people on the flip side die..that doesn't work. Saying that Hamas is using " human shields" (a term I abhor) is like giving a free pass to brute force used by the IDF.

I abhor violence. In fact, my personal belief system is closer to pacifism or non-violent demonstration ( ala Gandhi) However, I am honest about human nature and history. You would be hard pressed to find ANY country who would show restraint when being attacked, especially when the people attacking them has its destruction as their stated goal. In fact, I think Israel is being pretty gentle. At almost any other point in history, Gaza would have been completely taken over and living under martial law. I can think of no other instance, in which a nation who is so much more technologically advanced/ militarily superior DOESN'T control the land around it. So, on a historical scale, Israel is behaving very well. Certainly, if the tables were turned, I highly doubt Palestinians would do the same. The Hamas charter states as much.
I agree that it is unfair to lump all Palestinians with Hamas. I'm sure there are Palestinians who are terrified and just want peace. However, we cannot overlook the fact that 44% of population voted for Hamas. Now, those numbers might not be accurate, but even if the number was 25 or 30% that's not an insignificant part of the population. I think we have to conclude that there are a decent number of Palestinians who do support Hamas and its mission.

See Palestinians are desperate...and Hamas feeds on that. Israel has the right to defend itself , nobody is questioning that but I do think the blows could have been softened. It doesn't help when israeli politicians come on tv and say that the deaths of children should considered collateral damage...comments like that burn shows that Israel is willing to accept the death of palestinian civilians. There is disproportionate force used from one side, the numbers show it and that is what is causing this "war " on social media.

I get what you are saying and I hate the civilian casualties. So horrific, but I'm not sure what other options Israel has. Can you imagine the back lash amongst the Israeli people if they didn't feel their government was aggressively defending them ? Also, I'm sure someone already said it, but the Iron Dome is what keeps Israeli casualties so low. Things would be quite different if that didn't exist. I think we can all agree that Hamas must be replaced with moderate, reasonable leadership who is willing to compromise. That would bring lasting peace. I doubt it will happen, but I hope to be proven wrong.

The major reason for this is that Israel spends millions and millions to protect there citizens. The iron dome intercepts rockets and bombs launched from gaza and prevents them from making contact.

They also have bomb shelters. Every single building and house built is required to have one.

Hamas took all that money in aid that should have been used to protect the Palestinians by building bomb shelters, etc et. And used it to build tunnels leading directly into a kibbutz, peoples homes, to secretly attack Israelis. They used that money to buy weapons.

This conversation is going in circles....there are facts that whether or not you like them, are still facts.

I just dont get this back and forth. I'm not usually very open about my politics but this issue seems pretty clear cut. If Hamas would stop fighting Israel there would be no war. If Israel stopped fighting there would be no Israel. How can anyone disagree on who is in the wrong here?

Spinoff to Israel/Palestine thread from last week...

Just read this :( and it made me think of this thread:

Joan Rivers has zero sympathy for Palestinian civilians killed in the Gaza conflict because they had fair warning to get out, and didn't ... so they deserve to die.

Joan was at LAX yesterday when she doubled down on her now famous rant about Israel defending itself ... by screaming she doesn't want to hear about civilian casualties.

A sample of her rage: "They started it. We now don't count who's dead. You're dead, you deserve to be dead."

You have to see the rest. You can't accuse Joan of not having an opinion.

And that opinion (stance) is JUST as bad as the Palestinians handing out candy during 9/11.

We need not be happy the other side is killed. We should NEVER celebrate a dead Palestinian in the middle of war.

It makes her WOSE than them and does NOT help contribute to what everyone wants, peace.

No one should ever celebrate a death! Especially people who live in a war zone and dragged into this horrible war with no where to go!
