New York offers three types of documents
Customers have three options when it comes to getting a driver license, permit, or non-driver ID in New York State.
Enhanced
REAL ID
Standard
After October 1, 2020, only the Enhanced or REAL ID will be accepted to get on a domestic flight, enter certain federal buildings or military bases (unless you have a Passport). If you plan to travel, we recommend you upgrade before 2020.

I got an Enhanced license. I was on line for many hours to renew my license, so I figured that since I had all of the paperwork needed anyway, I might as well spend the extra $30 and get the Enhanced license now. I still have my passport, so it's not required, but it's one less thing to have to think about.

i didn't have any plans to get the Real ID, but now that i'm playing with the idea of going on an alaskan cruise next year... and might depart from canada...
looks like i'll be getting a Real ID sooner than i was expecting.

I'm not due to renew until 2021, which is when I will. Wild horses couldn't drag me into a DMV a day before it's absolutely necessary.

Same.. I travel a lot so I always keep my passport up to date. I guess when my license expires, I will renew with the Real ID.

I don't know what I have I guess the standard one but it looks like the new ones. It say not for federal use on it. I lost mine and needed it quickly to fly so I just got a replacement one and it looks like the new ones.
When I have to renew I will get the one where I can fly domestically and get into federal buildings I am considering getting the one I can get into Canada and mexico but only because I don't have a passport which I really should get.

I renewed my passport this year, so I'm good for quite a while.

You have to be a citizen to get an Enhanced license. you need all the same documenrs as the REAL ID, plus showign you are a citizen. You can then use it for crossign into canada/medixo by land or sea. ( still need a passport of air travel to Canada or Mexico.)
if you are not a citizen you can still get the REAL ID & use it as ID for domestic flghts, but not for travel to Canada & Mexico.
You can also get enhanced & REAL ID versions of non driver IDs, if you don't drive but want it for ID purposes.
I got the enhanced when mine was up for renewal in the spring. I have a current passport, but I feel like I might forget it for domestic travel in the beginning of the change.

Some Federal government buildings will be off-limits unless you have a passport as well. I can't find a list of buildings, though. I keep seeing "200,000+ Federal Buildings, but museums, libraries, etc, aren't among the restricted buildings", so I'm not 100% sure what ones they're referring to.
As long as you have a valid passport, you don't need a REAL ID or Enhanced ID at any point.

hmm good to know. Either way I will minimally get the real ID even if I had a passport I am not looking to carry a passport around just to be able to get into the buildings that might need it plus to fly domestically something else to worry about having to keep track of.

I voted other. I have (2 licenses) my German license and my NY license. I’ll get my NY license renewed at the end of the year. I guess I’ll have to get the enhanced license. I just want to keep both licenses up. I really don’t want to have to take another driver test for NY. It’s probably illegal to have two driver’s licenses, but whatever; I work around it.
I use my passport for traveling. I use that with my permanent residency.

I got the REAL ID when I renewed.
Same.
It was the same price as standard - it just meant I had to go to DMV.

Yes, you can still renew the Standard license by mail or online.

Follow these 3 steps to renew online and keep your current document type
If you already have a Enhanced or REAL ID, or you want to keep your Standard, you can renew online. Your document type will stay the same.
Step 1: Pass an eye test by an approved provider, like a pharmacy (find a test location now), or have a professional complete a paper report.
Step 2: Renew online. You will keep the same document type you currently have (Standard, REAL ID or Enhanced).
Step 3: Download and print a temporary license in PDF format to use until your new license arrives. It will arrive in the mail within 10 business days.

Yes. Just for the standard license for driving, not for travelling on domestic flights or across the border. But of you have a current passport, a standard license is all you need anyway.

Great, thanks. I thought the enhanced license was something one had to have beginning 2020. I‘ll get the standard license then. I‘ll get it when I visit my family for Xmas.
