Spinoff to critiquing appearances on this board
I thought this was interesting.
http://everydayfeminism.com/2015/02/kristen-stewart-internalized-misogyny/
I always go back and forth on the debates on here. It's undeniably fun to gossip about celebrities--will she have a girl or a boy/that's a weird skirt she's wearing, but I get uncomfortable when people get really nasty about things people can't change.
And yes--I know that Amal will never read this board, and no, I don't stay up at night and cry for Eva Longoria when people are meean...but something always gets a bit under my skin when I see people being downright cruel about things like a puffy pregnant face or a masculine jawline or a funky weight gain--on anyone. I mean--these things are not unique to celebrities....
I can't relate entirely to this article, but it helps me understand a bit about why I might be getting so uncomfortable-something I haven't been able to put my finger on....Anyway...food for thought.

I think it's kinda ridiculous how critical some people are on here. Yes part of the appeal is critiquing celebs but some people should post a pic of themselves before attacking someone else.
We're all just a bunch of goobs on the interwebs, anyway LOL

Re: Spinoff to critiquing appearances on this board
I agree with you about being cruel Bout things people can't change. I try to stick to comments about unfortunate outfits or hair and makeup.
For some reason though, I have very little sympathy for the reality whores (the kardashians, Heidi and spencer and others like them).

Agreed!
Here's the thing...if you're looking at photos (or really, just clicking onto this board on purpose), then you're up for the game of checking out red carpet pics, gossip, etc.
Strictly superficial stuff.
And we all have an opinion on how a person is dressed. Human nature.
But sometimes I will see a comment on here like "look at her knee...it looks SO WEIRD" or "her pinky finger is at a crooked angle, what's going on there?" or "gross cuticles!" and I'm just like...well WTF, you're probably hunched over your computer screen in two-day-old underwear. I don't really know why people zero in on those tiny details. Or HOW they do it.
It's just very strange, these microscopes we employ to hate on each other.

I feel like there are certain posters that always always are just mean. I don't know how else to put it lol
Even if it's not a bad pic or if it's a beautiful celeb. They find something to say
Yes it's the celeb board and I say my fair share but certain people are just miserable lol

Re: Spinoff to critiquing appearances on this board
I say it's hypocritical to deem which judgement is acceptable. Regardless, the majority on here has said mean comments. It doesn't make you are any better than me if you called Lindsy Lohan a sloppy mess and I remark on someone's weird knees. Both are negative comments and both are rude things to say to anyone in real life. If anything I think the first comment is worse and more disgusting.
Eta: I'm not saying OP has said those comments, that just seems the consensus on here. It's ok to trash to talk some but not others.

You think that saying someone looks like a hot mess is worse than commenting on a body part?
Someone looking like a mess = temporary, can be changed.
Someone's "weird knees" (just an example) = they permanently have these knees. What would you like done so that their knees are more suited for society and your viewing pleasure?
It's not like any of these celebrities will read this board but IMO and in my life, there is a vast difference between saying someone looks like a train wreck and critiquing a body part.

Yes I do because someone like Lindsay Lohan has addiction issues and problems. But regardless my point is you can't decipher what is an appropriate judgement. It's all negative and all bad. Just my opinion.
Idk, I also don't read into the comments on here and think posters are so horrible because of them. Its all in fun. Im more astonished by Posts on the FHF board.

Re: Spinoff to critiquing appearances on this board
Here's my two cents.
I think what happens on a board like this is that *most* of us don't consider a celebrity to be a "real" person therefore, you don't feel bad saying what you want about them. They are just these dolled up "pretend" people that we see in pictures and on TV. Sure, they are human like the rest of us but I think we hold them up to this VERY high ideal so it's easy to sit around and rip on stupid things like their funny knees, bloated face, or cr@p hair because ANY deviation from perfection is sort of shocking to most people since that's the image Hollywood and the media have created.
If this were real life and real people we KNOW that we were commenting on, I would be bothered by what people say but it's not. This is just mindless ANONYMOUS entertainment so you're more inclined to say what you really feel. That being said, I don't think that someone calling someone ugly on here is really indicative of the type of person they are or that they are insecure and lacking something in their own lives. Sometimes a rose is just a rose...........there is NO reason to really look too deep into what people say on here. I'm sure many of us think some of these things every day about people we pass on the street too BUT the difference is IRL, you have the common sense to keep your mouth shut.
Why else are pics posted on this board???............the SOLE purpose is for commentary. And you just have to accept that the commentary won't always be nice, that's fine. Take it for what it is, a random comment on a forum by someone you don't know who is commenting on someone that means NOTHING to ANY of us. There is NO consequence for being completely blunt about what you think on a celebrity forum which is why you see the comments you do. Just take it with a grain of salt.

I think that the difference is that we as women shouldn't be tearing other women down for pleasure - some people are so nasty in their responses. I comment on outfits, never on someone's appearance by calling out her physical attributes. People tear someone down who may look perfectly fine in their outfit just because THEY would never wear it. It's a fine line and I think people don't realize how judgmental and nasty they sound. I think it speaks more about them than anything else. Like they are projecting insecurities.

Again, it's just a silly celebrity board. There is really nothing anyone can say on here that would really get me heated. I just can't get my feathers ruffled because someone things a celebrity has fat knees or is ugly. People can think what they want.
This isn't meant to be a board where women come together for the betterment of society, it's just a stupid newsgroup of people who don't know each other commenting on pictures. I think your expectations for this board are too high and quite honestly, if you find the comments too offensive perhaps you shouldn't be on this board. I'm not saying that to be nasty (at all), I just feel like if you're bothered by something, remove yourself from the situation. KWIM?

I think there's a HUGE HUGE difference between ripping someone apart in your own reality ........and commenting on a celebrity - HUGE difference.
Reading the article, maybe the writer as an immature 17 year old felt better about herself tearing down Kristen Stewart - but I tell you as a grown woman I don't actually COMPARE myself to a celebrity - as someone said on the Clooney thread, 'she's not relatable' - NONE of these people, unless you happen to know someone personally, are relatable in our lives -

I think there's a HUGE HUGE difference between ripping someone apart in your own reality ........and commenting on a celebrity - HUGE difference.
Reading the article, maybe the writer as an immature 17 year old felt better about herself tearing down Kristen Stewart - but I tell you as a grown woman I don't actually COMPARE myself to a celebrity - as someone said on the Clooney thread, 'she's not relatable' - NONE of these people, unless you happen to know someone personally, are relatable in our lives -
ITA 1000%!!!

Spinoff to critiquing appearances on this board
Saying a dress is bad is not the same as calling someone horse face. It's just mean.
I am not jealous of these woman I find unattractive. I'm not comparing my life to theirs and I find the article a bit off putting.

I think it's kinda ridiculous how critical some people are on here. Yes part of the appeal is critiquing celebs but some people should post a pic of themselves before attacking someone else.
We're all just a bunch of goobs on the interwebs, anyway LOL
This. Word. For. Word.

I've seen the knee thing said more then once and it always makes me Like what does your knees look like? There knees. Not attractive on anyone. It's just so petty to single something like that out.
