Spinoff to Cloverfield post
If something did go down are you prepared? Do you have weapons, canned food, meds, water etc. I was saying to my husband if something did happen we would be screwed because we have nothing.
Would you get off LI? We are kind of "trapped" here

honestly, this is why I don't want to move to LI.
there's really no where to go if the shyt hits the fan...at least in the city or Westchester...you can get to Ohio or something (Ohio is good, right )
but I think we are pseudo prepared. we don't have guns, but we have a few other things we could use to protect ourselves.
sadly, canned food is not my thing, put I may have to pick some up. I know where our nearest fallout shelter is as well.

Then you are more prepared than us. I have no idea...

Re: Spinoff to Cloverfield post
My mother talks to me about this all the time. She is more worried about a hurricane then any other type horrific event. She is always asking me how I'd get off the island and where I would go. I would also have to take my MIL because she does not drive. She has 4 cats I'd have to take too. They all hate each other, so I told my DH we'd throw they all in laundry bag and see how many cats we end up with. They don’t like my dog either so I honestly don't know what we'd do.
That's so funny you say Ohio that is originally where I am from. I have tons of family there. I would just get off the island and keep driving.

Re: Spinoff to Cloverfield post
I'm prepared only in that I have a copy of all important papers (licenses, title to car, medical records, birth certificates, and dog's vaccination records) copied in my car, and also in a fireproof lockbox...and I have a foldup crate for my dog in case, so if anything happens, I'll take a 1,000 out of the bank, and hit the road, we won't stop until we're safe....even if I have to walk.

Which is what i told my hubby and family after 9/11. I used to live in queens, still part of the island and last I checked I don't have a boat.
I worked at 2WTC and I learned a lot. I always keep a sweater, brush, umbrella and my meds with me. I never keep my cell phone on at work, everyone has my work number. Because of this I used to get laughed at with my backpack.
No one laughed that afternoon.
I had dry cereal and hard cash so I was able to nibble away some of my shock and had money to buy us water at a shop later. I had a battery enough to call the people I needed later and an umbrella to block the horrid sun that day when I wanted for a ferry to NJ.
Since then, I've upped the ante.
You can go to Red Cross for info on an emergency kit.
I keep five bottles of water, meds, doctor info, two lights, two spare sets of clothes, first aid kit, knife, some cash, flip flops for both of us, latex gloves (3 pair), two hand towels (the longer small rectangle shaped ones). That’s my home pack.
My everyday to work pack includes, spare glasses, contact case & solution, water (always filled before I leave home or work), meds, fully charged blackberry and umbrella. My purse includes all my info as well.
On top of all of THAT, I have contingency plans.
You know they are mostly just a good intentions until they are forced to be used, but I believed in it anyway.
Terrorist attack – how to respond to: Jim & I both at work / Jim at home / I’m at home / I’m out and about, Jim at work / vise versa / Jim in the City (very very rare)
Severe Weather conditions Same questions
Fire Same conditions and also includes escape plans for home and what to take. How to handle the animals, etc
Trapped/Seige If we must stay at home, defenses, escape, routes to alternate hold ups, etc
Less Immediate Danger but still urgent Know at least 5-10 alternate routes from where ever you may be to the following: Home, parents, work, ‘other safe house’.
#1, I am a daughter of a Navy Man #2, I am a granddaughter, daughter, niece, cousin, sister and wife of all branches of the military and almost all major wars including some members of special Ops #3, I am from a family of gun-toking Texans, and yes I am a decent shot. #4, Both my hubby and I are able to use and own blades (family and individuals, I have mine, he has his) #5, Hubby is more qualified in hand to hand and other deadly defenses. #6, I am a thinker and quick on my feet and proven to be calm in high tension events (I mean proven as trampled with an airplane engine flying at me literally) Mob hysteria isn’t just an idea to me it’s a reality and dealing with nutty nervous panicked people is something I understand as well as directing them or avoiding them.
Being prepared isn’t a joke or overkill in my mind. You only get one chance to be caught unprepared, but then it’s too late.
ETA: my hubby thought I was nuts, but went along with this because of my experience with 9/11 and to make me feel better. Believe it or not, he used my contingency plan on the day of the blackout, he was in the city (ilke the 2nd time that whole year). He later said he was surprised how easy the plan was and how much it made sense to know ahead of time what to do.
Teachs him to laugh at me!!

Re: Spinoff to Cloverfield post
DH & I have a plan in we've spoken about where we would meet if we were both in the city.
If we were at home, we would be living on canned tomatoes & then we'd need to go to my mom's & eat everything in her freezer.
My dad is like McGuyver so I'm pretty sure we be fine if he was around.
