spinoff to circumcision question

My DH was not born in the US he was born in Romania, where circumcision is not usually done unless it is because of religious reasons...

When my husband was 9 months he had an infection and they ended up circumcising him....

Now with our son.... we were wondering if we should it for my son also.....

My husband will be the one showing him how to do stuff when he is a little boy and we thought that if his is different than his dad's it might affect him?

Any ideas?

So basically if the dad is should the son also be.....?

I feel bad for my son as I think it will hurtChat Icon

Re: spinoff to circumcision question

I want to do it as soon as he's born so there's no chance of him remembering any of the pain or discomfort ........

For whaever reason, my cousin didn't have it done until he was 9 or 10 years old - Not only does he remember the agony - he's had a ton of problems since then -

It's certainly a personal choice so you have to do what you feel is right. If you are going to have it done though, I would think sooner is better than later.Chat Icon

If you choose to have it done while you are still in the hospital, he won't even remember the pain or discomfort from the procedure and it will be over before you/he can even blink.

Re: spinoff to circumcision question

I had my son here in the UK and the majority of men here aren't circumcised, however in the 40's there was a bit of a trend for it, and my FIL is circumcised, but my husband isn't.

Now, I am Jewish and it was important for me to have my son done, so I had to find a Mohel and have it done. My husband isn't concerned with our sons willy looking any different than his, nor did he ever know that his dad's was different than his willy.

Re: spinoff to circumcision question

I don't necessarily think that if dad is, than son should be.

I think my feeling is based more on what is more likely to be accepted or "preferred" later in life by him. I circumcised my son b/c I felt that he would have preferred to be that way when he grew up....if that makes any sense! DH felt the same.

Re: spinoff to circumcision question

I think I read somewhere that it is beneficial for the child to be like dad-- so, if your husband is circumsized, you should consider it for your child. I bet there is some research out there if you look for it.

If we have a boy, we are Jewish-- so there is no question about having it done.

Re: spinoff to circumcision question

We are having a Chat Icon so this isn't an issue right now but we had discussed what we would do if we had a Chat Icon

My DH is circumsized but if we had a Chat Icon we probably would NOT have circumsized him for various reasons.

I agree. Father and son will always be different, no matter what you do to their parts. Plus, I'm never of a fan of doing something just because "that's the way it's always been done." I have no issue with personal and/or religious beliefs, but to do it just to be like dad (or classmates) shouldn't be the primary reason.

DS isn't because DW and I both agreed that we think he would prefer NOT being snipped.

Re: spinoff to circumcision question

I have two sons, and neither of them are circumcised. My DH is, and I am sure it won't be a problem. My 2 year old never even sees his father naked.

It is very easy to explain why they are different anyway, and I don't think it is emotionally scarring to have different genitalia than your father.

I totally agree with you here. DH has bought this up as a reason why we should circumsize our baby and I really think there should be a better reason.

It's only in America that the circumcision rate is so high. It's mostly done due religious reasons or to society's view that it's the right thing to do. In other countries, babies are not circumsized unless it's for religious reasons.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recently came out with a statement that circumsision is an unnecessary surgery for an infant child.

Re: spinoff to circumcision question

Both DH and DS aren't cut...but I would have never based my decision on the benefit of both of them looking the same.

I don't think DS has ever seen DH's. I don't think he ever will.

The influence of having a DH who isn't cut in the decision is the fact that he's never been made fun of, no girl has ever turned him away, and he's never had any infections.

My DH is and we did not circumcise our son. I don't think it's a big deal.

DH is cut but DS is not. I wanted to leave him intact. He is 18 mos and has never had an issue with his penis (well other than he cannot keep his hands off of itChat Icon ).

It is a very personal choice though. It is becoming less and less *standard* to circumcise for medical (non-religious) reasons, and being that I am 1st gen here, no one in my family is done.

Re: spinoff to circumcision question

I am leaning towards not cutting this baby. I don't see any need to. The only reasons DH was able to come up with was "I have it done." Which I don't think is really a reason & "It's cleaner." which is untrue. I asked DH if he spent a lot of time as a kid standing next to his father to compare penises. He said that he had never done that or ever really paid attention to his father's. To me, that means wheter they look alike or not is probably a non-issue. Plus, I figure it's not that big of a deal to explain if DS starts asking one day.

DH was born in Italy and is uncut. Our boys will be circumcised for reasons we both agree on.
