Spinoff to breastpumps
Do you take your breast pump with you to the hospital?

No, but I knew that my hospital made pumps available if requested. I actually waited until a month after I came home from the hospital to buy my pump....to make sure I could BF long-term.

Re: Spinoff to breastpumps
No, I would only use a pump that early on if I got engorged anyway.
If you are planing to exclusively pump, the hospitals have great pumps for you to use. If you are planning to nurse, they say that you should just nurse directly from the breast for a while to get DC used to it with a proper latch and such. With my first DD, she was only on the breast until 3 months. I won't wait that long to pump this time but probably at least 3 weeks.
ETS: This is JMO. Other people believe differently and will do differently. No judgment on anyone else and/or what they decide to do.

I have to still order mine, but I think I will use the ones they have at the hospital while I am there.

Re: Spinoff to breastpumps
I plan to pump only - so I think I will be renting a hospital grade pump rather than buying one ...........

Re: Spinoff to breastpumps
I just took a breastfeeding class this weekend, so this is what I came away with in regards to your question:
- Colustrum is what the baby eats the first 3 to 4 days of life-- this is proper nourishment for the baby and the consistency is different than breast milk
- The colustrum is incredibly thick and more difficult to pump due to its consistency. The lactation consultant who taught the class did not recco pumping at this time.
- It takes 3 to 4 days after birth for your milk to come in, also known as "let down", and become engorged. Since most likely you will no longer be in the hospital at this time, you will not need to pump in the hospital.
- Breast milk is all about supply and demand, so the more you pump, the more you create.
- Ideally, you are not supposed to give a baby a bottle until 3 to 4 weeks if you are planning on breastfeeding-- because you want them to learn how and get used to breastfeeding. When it is time to do this, dad should introduce the bottle. So there really is no need to pump before then, unless your boobs are killing you.
The benefit that I see in bringing your pump to the hospital, is that you have people on hand that are knowledgeable and can help you set it up and give you a basic tutorial, even though you are not ready to pump yet.
HTH.

I didn't. The hospital should have them available for you.
