Spinoff to Baptisms and now onto Godparents
Got a question for you, well something DH and I have been pondering.
We are Catholic and feel its proper for our Godparents to be Catholic. We are def. 100% having my sister as the Godmother, but we are undecided about the Godfather. DH has no siblings. Which would you choose:
My brother (is it weird that the godparents are brother & sister) or My sister's FI (they are getting married 10/09 so they won't be married yet)
I think we are leaning towards my brother, but what do you all think?

I asked my sister and her fiancee. I am due 9/25 and they will be married 10/4. I like the idea of a couple better.

Re: Spinoff to Baptisms and now onto Godparents
I don't think Godparents have to be married.
I have two God-Children and DH isn't the God-father for either, one was born 10 years before DH. My niece is 1/2 Catholic, 1/2 Jewish so her God-Father is my sister's BIL, they wanted to have both faiths represented even though it is a Catholic ceremony.

I agree with you. My aunt and uncle got divorced a few years ago and I no longer have a godfather. I think you should pick the people that are close to you and hold a special place in your life. I wouldn't pick someone just because they are a couple, I don't think that is necessary but that's just my opinion. We picked my BIL and sister and we've already decided that down the road with our next child it will be my brother and my very, very best friend of 20 years. Just go with what feels right to you.

Do both godparents HAVE to be catholic? My brother was never christened in any church (DONT ASK), but I would love him to be the godfather

I will most likely have both my brother and sister. I see nothing wrong with it at all. I agree with the others to go with what feels right.

depends on the church, but generally speaking only one godparent HAS to be catholic.
As for the OP, I would pick the person who will always be a part of DC's life. I don't understand why just because people get divorced they are no longer godparent. IMO, when you are asked to be a child's godparent you are making a life-long commitment to that child no matter what. This is coming from someone who hasn't seen her real godmother since 1983 (with no legitimate explanation - not even a divorce to blame).
If you don't think your FSIL has it in her to be there no matter what then go with your brother.

Godparents don't need to be married.
My brother and sister will be our child's godparents (if they accept).
And my brother and I are the godparents together of one of my cousins.

I believe this info is correct. I just became a godparent. I was baptized (I am the SIL of the parents.) The 'godfather' was raised catholic but was NOT baptized (Brother of the father). Technically he is not a 'godfather'... they have another term for it, but it's ok as long as at least one was baptized and current in the church.

I believe that in the Catholic religion, at least one Godparent needs to be Catholic. The other 'Godparent' is actually called a 'Sponsor' since he/she is not a member of the Catholic religion.
I am sticking with blood relatives for my DD's Godparents: my SIL and my brother. I like that we are using one from each side of the family.

Re: Spinoff to Baptisms and now onto Godparents
totally correct, one Godparent must be catholic and have received ALL of their sacraments, the other would be considered a "sponsor"
in the past many people choose Godparents on who theyd want to take care of their child God forbid something happened to them,.,.,I believe that the Godparents i picked for my DS should be the ones who are supporting his love for Jesus, and giving him a place to feel comfortable and safe talking about and asking any questions he may have about his faith,,, totally go with your brother!!

My church said that just one godparent had to be catholic. I am not sure if it varies at each church. Honestly they never even checked if the godparents for my DS were catholic. They both happened to be catholic, but they never asked for proof.
