Spinoff to Baptism (Catholic)

When did you contact your parish about the birth of your child and when are you having your Baptism? I'm just curious.

Also, does anyone know if Good Shepherd in Holbrook does mass Baptisms (ie multiple babies at one time)?

Thanks

My nephew was baptized there and there were about 5 other kids that day.

Re: Spinoff to Baptism (Catholic)

We contacted our church after our daughter was born because DH was superstitious. We would have been able to do the baptism 3 weeks later. My church does no more than 8 babies at a time.

Re: Spinoff to Baptism (Catholic)

they do 6 babies at a time.

i booked ours for sept already because we have to do it then due to DH's family out of country. they need to get plane tickets and we want to have it outside, so that only left us with sept.

Re: Spinoff to Baptism (Catholic)

we probably could have waited until the baby was born to set everything up, but we aren't able to be flexible with the dates. We set it up in our 8th month and DC will be baptized when he/she is 3 months old. That is tradition in our family, though others do it earlier or later.

Re: Spinoff to Baptism (Catholic)

Most churches have scheduled baptisms 1-2x month (except for during Lent, when most churches suspend Baptisms). You can always find out your church's set schedule if that helps you plan better; we did this we DD#2, and planned ahead for a very nice, late summer garden party afterwards - I loved planting the garden in my pregnancy, knowing that what I was planting would be blooming for her party! With DD's, we called after they were born to actually register them for baptism.

Also, most baptism dates can be adjusted for special circumstances (ie, relatives visiting, etc). Baby is due mid-August, and DH's parents are coming in some time September from Australia. Our church said they'll gladly do a small, private ceremony if it does not coincide with the scheduled baptisms.

A lot of couples aren't particularly religious when they go to have their babies baptized. You will probably be welcomed at your church! You really can't go just anywhere, as the parish will likely prefer that you live within its geographical boundaries. If you have not registered with them officially, they will ask you to do so at that point.

Good luck!
