Spinoff to another post...

I am 36 weeks pregnant and am thinking about L&D and who will be there. DH will be the only one in the room but I know my parents and sister will want to be at the hospital and I know I want them there. My question is, where do they go? Do they go to L&D? Or to maternity? And what happens if it's the middle of the night and past visiting hours? Will they not be allowed there? I'm scheduled to tour SB this Sunday so I can confirm with them (my last tour was canceled but I am delivering at SB). TIA!

My parents sat in the hallway in L&D (this was at LIJ before the new building opened). I feel like some hospitals make the people waiting in the general waiting room but I could be wrong.

Re: Spinoff to another post...

they will wait in the waiting room and your DH will be able to give them updates. (in the maternity ward waiting room)

middle of the night visitors?? Past visiting ours they will not be allowed in to see you. If you are still in labor int he middle of the night they will still be in the waiting room. but not allowed in to see you. (in most cases)/

Usually they will have to wait in the general waiting area for the hospital unless your hospital has a special L&D waiting room for them.

Thanks so much, ladies!!! I just didn't want them to not be allowed in the hospital at all, that would be awful. I'm sure as long as they're allowed somewhere in the hospital while I'm in labor, that will be fine. And I want to know that if I go into labor in the middle of the night, they will be able to enter the hospital.

Re: Spinoff to another post...

I was in labor for 27 hours and gave birth at NY Presbyterian - Cornell. We called my parents and they showed up about 7 hours into my labor after I was hooked up to the epi. My parents showed up around mid-morning and hung out in the room with me and DH watching TV, chatting, etc. I started to not feel well after lunch and asked them to leave. They then waited in the waiting room, cafeteria, etc. for 12 hours until I had DS. DS was born around 3am and rushed to NICU. I asked to see my mom and they let her right in. The rest of my family followed DS to NICU and I was wheeled down to NICU a few hours later. My family came back almost everyday and stayed with me in the recovery room and then in NICU (I was allowed 2 guests in NICU at a time) until DS was discharged. I felt like the hospital was very flexible about my guests and never felt like they rushed anyone out.

I delivered at SB in April. I had DH and my mom in the room, you are allowed two if you want. The rest of our families had to wait outside L&D. There are tons of benches and couches outside and a starbucks as well. I was able to talk, text, and skype with them all day! I delivered at night and after waiting around all day I told the nurses that I really wanted to see them. While it's against their policies, they let it go and had them come up to one of the doors while I was being wheeled up to my room so they got to meet DD for a few minutes but I was so glad. Apparently DD got a little too close to the door though bc by the time we got to the nursery there were three security guards there responding to the alarm!
