Spinoff: Stores open on Thanksgiving-Will YOU shop?
I used to work retail. I actually miss waking up at my moms at 3:30am to get to the store by 5:30. Seeing all those crazy people lined up since midnight (I used to work at Circuit City).
As the years have passed I have ever really had a desire to shop the doorbusters. Working on the "inside" i know that there arent that many great deals out there, the retails just want us all to THINK there are
I do not shop on Black Friday.
But I could ALWAYS count on 3 days off a year. Thanksgiving, Christmass and Easter. Since I am not Chriistian, it was that much more importsnt that I could have Thanksgiving with my family.
For the past few years I see the stores open earlier and earlier. Every news report says "so they can gain market share". I saw one B.S. statement from Target saying "We have carefully considered whats best for our customers and staff..." when refereing to opeing at 8pm on Thanksgiving.
I call Bull.
So I am curious: Will YOU shop if the stores are open? Are you happy you can get a few extra hours of shopping on Thanksgiving? Are you disgusted?
just to add: I have gone to the grocery store to get a few things for my meal I forgot. I am obviously talking about reatial sales.

I have better things to do on Thanksgiving than to shop- like be with my family and pig out. They invented online shopping for a reason...

No!
First of all, I don't celebrate Christmas so the appeal to get gifts "done" isn't there.
Second, I can't deal with crowds. To me, its not worth a discount to deal with so many crazy people. I'd rather pay full price and shop in peace.

Re: Spinoff: Stores open on Thanksgiving-Will YOU shop?
I don't do the whole black friday shopping thing anyway - i just can't be bothered to go through the hassle to save a few $ on something that i might not even have wanted in the first place
Thanksgiving night is made for lying around and digesting the food you've stuffed into your face earlier that day. The day itself is supposed to be a day for getting together with family and reflecting upon the year and what you're thankful for, not IMO going out shopping for that crazy deal. If you can't wait one more day to do that.. then its just further proof of how our society is going down the tubes with instant gratification
but honestly, i don't really care if other people want to be idiots. I know what i'm doing and it's not going to involve shopping

Re: Spinoff: Stores open on Thanksgiving-Will YOU shop?
Yes. I LOVE BF and it is a big tradition in my family to all go after the festivities are done. It was at 3am, but if you want the really good deals, you have to go when they open, otherwise you miss them. Luckiy, by 7pm is our families festivities are over for the day anyway.
I dont understand this "it is about being with your family on Thanksgiving" that keeps coming up. I personally, DO NOT miss or leave any of the days events to go shopping. Like I have said before, it in fact extends our family time whereas my siblings and I and my Aunts all go out like "idiots"

Re: Spinoff: Stores open on Thanksgiving-Will YOU shop?
DH and I ALWAYS go out on Black Friday but we don't get up early and wait in line for anything specific. We just like to go out and about all day poking around the stores. I always found something very festive about Black Friday, it's the official kick off to the holiday season. I like all the hustle and bustle, I think it's fun.
As far as Thanksgiving night, I haven't ever gone out to shop then but I am not opposed to it. My whole family has Thanksgiving early, we get together around 1-2pm, so by 8'ish we're all home. But realistically, I like to just chill out with DH on Thanksgiving night, watch a Xmas movie, eat leftovers, etc.

I agree!! It def gets me in the holiday spirit! I go out at mdnight with a good friend every year and it never cuts into family time! I don't think I would go out any sooner than that. I think the stores opening so early is getting a little crazy but whatever if there are people who are gonna go out I don't blame them for opening

I don't shop for the holidays on Thanksgiving but I appreciate grocery stores being open in the AM if I forget something.
I've done Black Friday in the past but I'm more of an on-line shopper now.

I've never gone out on Black Friday, so I definitely won't be going on Thanksgiving night
I have no moral objection to stores being open that night. I just hate crowds, and am not a "recreational" shopper by nature... I'm not going to buy stuff just because it was on sale, kwim?

Re: Spinoff: Stores open on Thanksgiving-Will YOU shop?
I wont, but my husband probably will. He's looking for something specific, so he'll try all the stores he thinks he'll get the best value for his money. We are done celebrating and home by 8pm on Thanksgiving anyway, so it doesn't really cut into our family time.
I haven't gone out holiday shopping at all on Black Friday since I had my DS 3 years ago. I will NOT subject him to that, no matter what time of day.

I do not shop on Black Friday so thanksgiving is def out... I personally do not do well in crowded areas so that's my reasoning.

I will be shopping online. You can get the same deals or even better deals online that same night/day. Lots of free shipping and no lines! Also there are great deals on Cyber Monday too.
ETA: I am not opposed to Shopping Black Friday.... I just have no desire to do it this year. If I was going got go it would definitely be after midnight.Even that is a stretch. I would probably pass out after all the food from dinner and wake up at 3/4am to go shopping.

Nope.
Like Nell said, online shopping exists for a reason!
Exactly.
If stores didn't open earlier, then shoppers would wait to shop after midnight or early Friday AM like they did in the past. However, since they are opening earlier, I think it makes people think they have to go out earlier so they can grab limited stuff before anyone else. It's a cycle. And then once one opens earlier, other stores feel like they need to follow suit to get more sales.

Spinoff: Stores open on Thanksgiving-Will YOU shop?
I've worked retail.
I've had to leave my family on Thanksgiving night to get to the store by 11pm because doors were opening up at midnight.
It SUCKED.
Did we (me and the other employees) make the best of it and have some fun? Sure.
But it STILL SUCKED to be there and not with my family.
I will NEVER be one of those loons out at midnight waiting behind the door to shop.

Nope, I feel like I can't air my gripes about the fact that stores are open and then go shop anyway.
As for Black Friday, I don't think I plan to go out. I don't live on LI and DH and I have done it a couple times- but more and more I find better prices on things I want on Amazon. I do very little in-store shopping this time of year.

Re: Spinoff: Stores open on Thanksgiving-Will YOU shop?
My Thanksgiving is spent eating and going from one house to the next. By the time I get home I am in a legit food coma and can't even THINK about shopping. So there is no way I am going to go into a crush of people fighting for deals. Plus.. I hate shopping in general. I prefer cyber deals.
