I have a Western Digital "Book" one (it stands up like a book would on a shelf!). It is 500 GB and I got it at Target.

Michele- I have this exact same one also. I bought it at Mirco Center (by BRU in Westbury). It's great- saves SOOOOOO much on my computer's memory. When I bought it and transferred all the pics on there, my PC's memory was at about 98% full. After the transfer, the PC mempry was back WAY down and there was less than 10% used on the external HD.
DEFIANTLY worth it!!

A warning to all...I bought this for my pics.
IT STOPPED WORKING. I can't retrieve ANYTHING on it without sending it out, which I refuse to do.
So that's my warning...keep in mind it could go bad and you may not have access to whatever you put on it.
I am so mad!! It was only about 1.5 yrs old at most.

Re: (spinoff) external hard drives to store pics?
I had to get one because I had so many pics on my laptops it was crashing all the time.
I have the Western Digital Passport. It has better reviews than the "book".
I have the 250GB version. It was about $99, depends on the sale. They go on sale once in a while.
A word of advice, I heard that a lot of those external hard drive (especially the book version) do crash without a warning. The warranty is usually for 1 year and they usually crash right after that. That being said, the warranty won't make your photos reappear if it crashes regardless of the warranty.
I still backup the external hard drive with CDs. It's time consuming but I feel safer that I have another backup with all the pics.

Re: (spinoff) external hard drives to store pics?
ALL hard drives WILL FAIL. It's just a fact. Moving parts, electronic components, etc. Every single drive ever made by any vendor will fail. Consumers just hope that the drive they have will fail years after they have gotten rid of it.
I'm a fan of Seagate drives myself. They have pretty good reliability. I wouldn't get a drive that's less than about 350GB. The optimal price point right now seems to be around 350GB-500GB. Any less than 350, and you usually don't save enough $ to justify the smaller size. More than 500GB, and you're paying more $ to shove more space into the same area.
That being said, there are always sales that make either end a good purchase, still.
If you are planning on using an external drive to store all your important photos, I would recommend having at least two, so if one dies, you still have a backup. I have all my photos on 5 different drives, between home and work.
