Spin off to Time out posts...
What do you do with your 21 month olds for discipline when you are out? I obviously can't do time out in a store, mall etc, but sometimes it isn't possible to just pack up and leave when I need to get something done.
How do you handle it?

If the place has a step he can sit on, I make him do that.
If not, I just do everything up to the time out. Get down to his level, tell him what was wrong about the behavior, make him apologize and then distract, distract, distract!!!

Re: Spin off to Time out posts...
For Ava, I would always (and still do), tell her she's in time out, and then turn my back to her until the time out is over if she's in a shopping cart or the stroller. The stroller, I would just turn it away from me, or if I have to now that she really walks most places, I find a spot for her to have a time out. It works just as well as when we're home.

I don't
All the books I have read, Parenting Mag's etc all say to pack up and leave ( well go sit in the car etc ) and well my life does not allow for that luxury so I just deal and try to keep some semblance of discipline and do what I can to end it.

Dh and I joke by saying time out is univerally available. If there is a wall, there is time out.

I have to say, I've always disagreed with the whole "pack up and leave" approach. I think that gives the wrong message to a child. I mean, if they're throwing an unbelievable tantrum that is seeing no end, then I can understand leaving, but for regular, run of the mill discipline issues, packing up and leaving is really not teaching them much, imo.

Re: Spin off to Time out posts...
See I can't always pack up b.c when she is throwing a fit she won't go in the car seat either so that doesn't help. But I always seem to be at a loss b/c she won't go into the stroller to restrain her when she is being a problem and when I try to put her in anyway people look at me like I'm kidnapping her. I know it is just the terrible two's but I feel like I'm at such a loss when she misbehaves out of the house.

Re: Spin off to Time out posts...
I have no problem disciplining DD in public. I've walked out of her gymnastics class a few times because of her behavior and not listening.
We don't do time outs, so I will threaten with a "DO YOU WANT TO GO HOME?!" and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
I do what I can to resolve it
But thankfully, it rarely happens.
