Spin-off to my dentist post...What do they do at their 1st visit ?
Is it cleaning only, when do they start getting x-rays etc ????....Thanks

Cleaned and counted her teeth, gave her a new toothbrush. It was quick. No x-rays yet. I forget when those start.

i work in a dentist office and 1st visit they try and count and clean their teeth, closer to 5 or 6 they do xrays and give flouride treatment

My dentist said around 2 years, same as my pediatrician. It's confusing though, some parenting books and mags I've read said you should go as soon as teeth appear.
I'm taking him around 2 years--don't see much point before then unless something is wrong.

dd went at 22 months
they cleaned her teeth, counted them and gave her a flouride treatment. She goes back in 6 months when they said they would TRY to get x-rays

im a hygienist and we recommend to see a child usually around age 3. Sometimes the first visit is very uneventful. sometimes we count teeth sometimes we dont - we just introduce the "fun" things at the dentist office. all depends on how timid the child is - comfort at that age is key. We have kids who cant wait to come see us again. LOL
to add we are a general practice and never had to send children to a pedodontist bc of the comfort level!!!

The AAP just recently changed their age of a first dental checkup to 1. As a parent and a hygienist I think around 3 years old is perfect. Most children do quite well at this age. It should be a fun, pleasant experience for them. Make sure you bring your camera! I usually pose my first timers with a jumbo toothbrush and chompers for a photo op

Can I ask out of curiosity why would you take xrays b/f the child even has permanant teeth? Why expose them to radiation at 2-3 when the teeth are just going to fall out in a few years?

I would like to add a few things.
<ost dentist will begin takign xrays around age 3- or at least, thats when they should. you cannot visually see between the back teeth, unless the cavity is quite large, and an xray will show small cavities that can be treated quickly and easily.
I n regards to treating them- the "back" baby teeth will last children till about age 9-10, sometimes they stick aroudn until age 12-13. I f a child has a cavity in those teeth at a young age, it is not going to go away or get better. the tooth is certainly not going to fall out before the cavity becomes a major problem- ie, becomes painful, infected or swollen. Unfortanately, with baby teeth, once they abscess, in almost all situations they need ot be extracted. Takign out a baby tooth before its time is not such a simple thing, since pne of the main purposes of baby teeth is to make sure the adult teeth erupt properly- if teeth are exctracted prematurely, other teeth may move around in the mouth, leading ot problems down the road. this can be prevented by making a child a space maintener- but this whole situation can be prevented by filling these cavities when they are small and treatable- and that can usually only be deteceted through xrays.
sorry this was so long. I hope it helps someone.
ETA: even on a child as young as 3 or 4, you can actually see the adult teeth developing o nthe xrays, which is another important thing to lkeep in mind- want to make sure everythign is goign alright.

Personally I do not take xrays on children younger than 5/6, unless I see a problem. A problem would be decay, an eruption issue, abcess etc. At 6 they start to get their adult teeth

Hi ladies, I currently work for 2 pedo offices 1 in nassau and 1 in suffolk.
Age 2 to 3 are the ages we see come in for first visits. we do cleanings/pt.ed/flouride tx and depending on findings xrays as well, yes in as small as 2 yrs old and depending on the child can be quite challenging.
every pedodontist is different, I work with 3, 2 of them want xrays on all children 3 and up with tight contacts the other waits until 4-5 ish. really depends on the doctor and caries history( if parents have a ton of decay,diet and nutrition)
basically stop bottle at night with milk or sippie cup with juice( try h2o instead) unless you brush their teeth right after.
stop thumb /paci by 3 otherwise bone gets too hard to go back to normal and then child needs some type of ortho at an early age to correct,
use a toothpaste with no fluoride look for xylitol brush 2x,
if childs teeth are close together YES floss their teeth just as you would your own regular floss and flossers
watch sticky candies including fruit snacks and rollups
and juice-gatorade is worse than soda.
have children eat something when ingesting juice so that the teeth arent getting a bath in sugar.
watch raisins and dried fruit can cause decay on those molars ( stay in mouth till 12-13)
some tips to stay caries free so that if you feel more comfortable waiting till 3.
look at your childrens teeth, if you see white spots, yellow spots , brown spots or black spots go to the dentist asap. those are all indicators of caries starting or there. depending on severity you would get a prescription of paste dependant on age as well ( with or without flouride)
if child bangs tooth and you see it getting dark go to dentist asap.

Thank you for all your reples !!!....For those of you that work at dental offices, in a previous post I had said that when I called my dentist office to schedule my DS's first appointment
( he's 3.5) , the woman said that they genearlly do not start seeing children until they are entering school unless there is a problem  ....They are not a ped. dentist ( my insurance will only cover one dentist per family)...Why do you think that she said this ??/ Shoul I pay out of pocket for a ped. dentist in your opinion ???? Thanks !!!
