Spin-off of Kindergarten homework

Does your teacher provide written instructions so you know what needs to be done? Ours doesn't, she feels that part of the homework is for the kids to remember what she told them to do. I understand what she's saying, but it's frustrating sometimes when DD doesn't remember part of the assignment until bedtime.

Re: Spin-off of Kindergarten homework

As I said in the other thread, we get a packet. The first page is written instruction for the entire packet and I have to sign it.
Honestly, I think it's a terrible idea to have the kids remember. Even High Schoolers get written instruction or have a planner that they can write their assignments in. It's a long day for a Kindergartener and expecting them to remember their homework assignment seems like a bit much to me.

Re: Spin-off of Kindergarten homework

When my DD was in K we got a sheet from the teacher outlining the homework, either on a weekly or daily basis. My DD is now in 1st grade and the teacher makes them write their homework in their notebooks from the board every day to teach them responsibility. This has been VERY difficult to adapt to, the kids are new to reading and writing and copying down 5+ hw assignments is not always easy. We have had several nights were she wrote it down wrong or was confused. At first I was really annoyed with this method, but I can see how in the long run how it will teach them some responsibility for their work, it is just frustrating as the parent to be out of the loop.

DS is in kindergarten and we get a written sheet with all the homework assignments on Monday. It all needs to be completed and sent back on Friday.

Exactly, even for 2nd graders it takes a few weeks to get used to writing it down, remembering what to bring home, etc. I would be annoyed at the K teacher in the OP and I would absolutely not expect your 5 yo to remember and then come home and tell you what he/she has to do. Great if they can talk about it and do it themselves, but not fair if they can't.

We also get a sheet every Monday on what needs to be done each day of the week.

We get all the homework for the week sent home in a packet on Monday. The first page of the packet outlines which pages are to be done on which day and any bonus work to be done. It may have some small additional comments for the assignments, if necessary. Each worksheet pretty much has the instructions laid out on it.

My son typically comes home knowing what some of his assignments are but definitely not all - I often hear him telling me - she didn't tell us we had to do this tonight!!! I am all for the kids remembering their assignments but I think some parent backup is nice - it has to be hard for some to remember it all.

I thought it was weird! A few parents complained at Back to School night and she said that's the norm everywhere.

The parents have exchanged numbers and we compare what the kids tell us to try and figure out the whole assignment.

Re: Spin-off of Kindergarten homework

Everyday, the teacher posts the assignments to a website.
