Kindergarten homework check in....

Just wondering how much (if at all) our Kindergarteners were getting...

Rj has been getting homework since the 1st full week of school... It originally was 1 worksheet a night, and now we are up to 2...

Last nights homework:

Write capital letter "B"- 5 times on each line (5 lines- so a total of 25 times)

Write lower case letter "b"- 5 times on each line (5 lines- so a total of 25 times)

Plus 10-20 min of reading each night...
and various "elective" reading/writing excercises that are for the entire school that Im really trying to accomplish as well...

He doesnt seemed overwhelmed at all... but I amChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Katherine's teacher doesn't start real homework until after Christmas break. We read for at least that long every day anyway though...

DD has been getting a 1 sheet assignment plus reading every night.
Since around the age of 3 I had been giving her 'homework' to do so the teacher assignments go by pretty quickly (less than 5 minutes). So to keep her busy I still give her my own assignments to do. Last night she had to read 2 books to her sister (DD2 is 2 months old) and she had to complete 3 math sheets (total of 30 math problems).
I figure that once she starts getting more assignments from the teacher I wont have to give her things to do...plus she wont feel overwhelmed when that does happen.

Re: Kindergarten homework check in....

I was told my son's teacher gives a lot of homework from mom's who had her...Without the reading, it takes 20-30 minutes. He is pooped after full day school and bitter about homework but he has been going with the flow and doing it (lots of complaining at first but then gets into it). I feel bad because I know he can do a better job - neater writing and better drawing but by the time he gets home he wants to just get it done quickly! I am trying to be patient.

He has been getting homework since the first week of school. Started easy but now more involved. He gets homework M-Th. He typically gets 3 worksheets to complete. Some have a bonus on the 2nd side to complete as well. They vary on topic - been mostly shapes, patterns, word recognition, applying the day's sight word, months/calendar events, counting, rhyming, etc. Usually involved - writing, reading, coloring, drawing, tracing, cutting, glueing - so all the tools in his pencil box. It is suggested you read with them for 15 minutes a night as well.

She gets 1 language arts worksheet per night M-Th. One side is practicing the letter of the day, the other side she has to either cut out 3 pictures of words that start with that letter or draw 3 pictures and write the word next to it. And 2 days a week they have to bring in an item from home that starts with a specific letter.

Her teacher told us last week that pretty soon she'll also be getting a math worksheet those nights. Plus we're asked to read with her 15+ minutes per day.

Nothing on the weekends except reading with her.

Re: Kindergarten homework check in....

We get a packet home on Monday night that contains the homework for the week (due on Friday).

It typically has:

-Writing lower case and capital letters (of one specific letter a week)

-Coloring the correct pictures that start with a specific letter, then cutting and pasting them into the correct location.

-Circling the correct thing out of a group of items (always different topic, but the same activity)

-Reading a story (I read it to him) and then drawing a picture in response to how the story made him feel.

It's usually only one page per night. I like that we get the whole packet at once though. If we have a rough day, we just do two homeworks the following day.

Re: Kindergarten homework check in....

We get homework Mon-Thursday. They use Envision cirriculum for math so they have been getting 1 page a night. Very basic stuff- sorting, drawing lines to correct stuff etc. They also get another page of homework- yesterday was cutting out B words from magazines and then pasting, another night would be writing.. Whatever they do in class the homework is something on the same lines as in class..

We also got an assignment that is due at the end of the week.. They have some district wide writing initiative. We have to use a folder and make a collage with everything that Jacob likes using pictures and cut outs and then put contact paper over it.

we also read 15 -20 minutes per night..

Re: Kindergarten homework check in....

We get a homework sheet on Monday which lists all the homework for the week. All homework is due on Friday. A typical week:

write the letter of the week - capital and lower case - 20 times (they have a notebook for this)

draw three pictures that start with the letter of the week and then write what each item is - DS has to spell it, even if he spells it wrong

math homework has been patterns (circle, square, circle - what comes next) - they draw the shapes and then continue the pattern. They've also done circle what doesn't belong, etc.

I write the sight words of the week on index cards and we have the review them every day - I always review all of them, not just the ones for the week

worksheets for language arts - they've done over/under, inside/outside, etc, color the items that start with the letter, etc

We have no problem getting it done for the week but DS doesn't like the sight words. Some are easy but the difficult ones are frustrating for him.

Re: Kindergarten homework check in....

Bella started getting one sheet of homework per night. It has ranged from writing letters that they have worked on to writing her name, to practicing cutting and drawing circles.

We are also reading to her each night for 15 minutes (like we always have done) as part of a program where they get a pizza coupon if they do 15 nights a month. We read every night, so Bella is excited for her pizza Chat Icon

Re: Kindergarten homework check in....

IMO I think Nate gets too much homework but he seems to be handling it well. Every day we have to go to a website to check homework assignments and notes from the teacher. He's in an accelerated program and the K curriculum is taught at a 1st grade level.

Every night he gets a language arts sheet and two pages of math

Every Friday he has a spelling test (5 words) and leading up to the test he has to do different activities
* Monday - 5x each
* Tuesdays - ABC order
* Wednesday - Sentences
* Thursday - study for test

Every Monday, he has a 'book report' due. He has to read the book, write the author's name, list the characters, story setting, draw a picture and write a sentence about his favorite/worst part of the story. Each month there is a genre that we pick a book from. October is realistic fiction Chat Icon

As if we don't have enough work each week, there are other family projects that we have to do. For next week, he has to 'interview' a family member about his name, it's meaning and if it represents him. Then create a mobile that represents the responses.

So much to keep track of.... I had to put some of the due dates in my blackberry to give myself reminders.

our HW seems pretty sporadic. we have had a booklet that we have been working on every night. I like that better, since we can do more on one night if we have another busy night.

None! Another reason I love Montessori. They don't really believe in homework in the literal sense. The kids work and focus so hard when they are there they believe that their time at home should be fun and for learning real life experiences, community, family, activity, etc.
I can't tell you how relieved I am with this b/c I would have a hell of a time getting Miranda to do homework after being in school for 7 hours.
