Idling a car with the A/C on is bad for the environment! What about Global Warming concerns!

will tomorrow be how cops eat donuts with tranfats even though they've been outlawed in the city?
is their ANY BOTD left in the world?
Ya know Jess, sometimes . . . . .
what prompted me to write this post is that every single year at the beginning of the summer Newsday puts out a warning regarding leaving dogs in the car while you "run" into the supermarket for 10 minutes. It always includes things like how fast the temperature rises in the car, how leaving a window open is insufficient, and how people should leave pets home.
I was completely taken aback by what I saw, and it upset me. BUT, what put me over the edge, and pushed me to actually write and say I saw a dog left in a car was the fact that when I called the K-9 unit I was told it was POLICY to leave the dogs in the patrol cars. That just makes me and .
I applaud you for taking the time to call about something that concerned you. It would concern me, too. Some people may not care but I don't see what's wrong with holding the police department accountable to the public on any issue.
I applaud you, too, mama!!!

Darlene, I am not saying that we should hold police accountable. I am not saying that you were wrong for being conncerned...I would be too if I saw that.
BUT when they explain that they have procedures in place and such, why don't we believe them?
why don't we believe that these cops LOVE their canine partners...b/c they DO. and that they wouldn't put them IN HARMS WAY if they thought something bad would happen.
I just think we don't know enough about PD policy (and we shouldn't either, but that's a whole other debate) to vilify them or make them look like dog batterers or people that don't follow the law.
It just gets to me sometimes b/c we dont' hear enough about why we LIKE our police officers. how often do you go to the cop that polices your block and say THANKS or even, GOOD MORNING??
They do a tough job...and they don't get enough credit for it. they don't get credit for being DECENT human beings half the time, as evidenced by the quick condemnation here.
Perhaps there is a certain TEMPERATURE requirment that they cannot leave the dogs in the car if it raising above, and it wasn't met here.
that is what I mean by benefit of the doubt.
I don't get how the first conclusion we draw is...Cops get away with abusing animals and we can't.
anyway, that is all.
PS my comment wasn't necessarily directed at YOU and your post, but a totality of the posts in general.

She didn't say we should get away with it, she said its another case of "do as we say, not as we do" and it is. There is a canine officer that lives on my block, he's a great guy & I believe he loves his partner. If I saw his dog alone in the vehicle I would be pizzed off and I'd say something. We have a good friend that is an officer, he loves to tell us about all the things he can do that we can't. I'm sure some of it is a joke, but some isn't.

well it's departmental policy. so it IS ok for them, under their guidelines.
there are REASONS for everything, some we as civilians we are not privy to, nor should we be imo.
hell, I WORK for the govt and there are some things I am not privy to.
it's the totem pole. and sometimes you just have to acknowlege where you land on it.

That is exactly why I posted. I did in fact believe them about their procedures and their policy to leave the dogs in the car. It's the policy that upset me. I have no doubt the officers love their dogs but the fact that the PD has a policy to leave a highly trained special dog in a patrol car while they are in court testifying (and could potentially be absent for HOURS) continues to make me and be very very .
