sperm count after wash
I know that most RE's say they require a sperm count of at least 5 million after wash. We're dealing with mf infertility and the counts we end up with is always around 10 million. But I read a lot of other girls getting counts of over 100 million after wash. I've even asked my RE about it and he said there is little evidence to support the fact that the higher counts make much of a difference in successful fertilization. But honestly this makes no sense to me. One would think that the higher the sperm count the better your chances...right? Can anyone shed any light on this?

Re: sperm count after wash
Well, I'll tell you this much...
our count was 70+ million post-wash and we didn't get pregnant... so the # isn't everything!
My RE said "anything over 5 million is icing on the cake."
I think it's more quality over quantity!

Re: sperm count after wash
I was always under the impression that the washing kind of gets rid of the sperm that wouldn't be of much use anyway...like only the strong survive, KWIM? I'm sure they wouldn't be wasting your time or theirs if there wasn't a goo shot at fertilization!! Hang in there!

Re: sperm count after wash
I guess you're right - I mean I did get preg twice on the 10mil count (unfortunately they ended in m/c's).... but after reading so many other posts about such high counts after wash I was getting a little concerned that maybe we dont have such a good shot. Thanks for the answers

Re: sperm count after wash
My dr told me that they use the same amount for all IUI's so higher/ lower counts don't really make a difference. The "guide" they gave me was that it needed to cover the bottom of the container!

Re: sperm count after wash
We conceived on between 5 and 7, I don't remember the exact #, so like the saying goes "it only takes one" but I'd like to think that the higher the count, the better your chances are.
ETA: that's if your issues are strictly MF.

Re: sperm count after wash
I've heard that anything over 20 mill does not make much of a difference. 10 mill is good!
My Dh had a high sperm count- 240 million for my IUI. But his morphology on his llast SA was 2%, so 2% of 240 is 4.8 mill. we'll see if it works!
