speech development

should i be concerned that my daughter at 15 months is really only saying mama, dada, whats this and on occasion wawa?

Starting to get worried that she doesn't say much.

She babbles a lot of nonsense and does understand directions when we give her directions to do things.

I wouldn't be concerned. At that age understanding is more important than saying words.

I was told around 6 words for 15 months is good. She has 4, so I wouldn't really be concerned. My dd just had her first explosion of words at about 17 months.

what does your pediatrician say?
they all seem to have differing opinions. I personally wouldn't be concerned, and I doubt my ped would either.
we just went to dd's 15 month visit... I had to list her words. I put "hi, bye, hot, up, down & woof" I asked him if woof even counted as a word... or "down" bc she doesn't actually say the whole word. he said they both count - any sound that has a meaning to them, that is repetitive. so anytime she sees or hears a dog, she whispers "woof" - there's definitely meaning and intent behind it to her. it seems like there are a lot of kids who really start talking more from 18m-24m.

My DD is 16 months and doesn't say too much either. She says things but doesn't often repeat then. She makes a lot of sounds like Cccc for clock. I swore she said fan one day and also I heard her say cat but never again! I heard there is a word explosion around 18 months so I am not too concerned yet.

i wouldnt be concerned until 2 years. my son has apraxia of speech & i didnt get him evaluated until 2 bc he did have a word explosion around 18 months

I saw my ped. yesterday and he said as long as they are saying a few words (IE: Mama, Dada, Baba) that there isn't a cause for concern, especially if they are able to follow directions age appropriately.

My DS is close to 16 months and has to be evaluated for speech because he isn't saying any words (or making sounds) and only follows directions a portion of the time.

I would say my dd vocabulary exploded between 15-18 months and has continued to amaze me every single day since then. Shes about to be 20 months.
If you have any question def talk to your peds all of us just have opinions. Were not your dd pediatrician who knows her medical history and any other important details.

I waited until DS was 18 months to say something to my ped, who then suggested contacting EI. DS only really says mama and dada as well. I am in the process of trying to get him evaluated now.

At that age toddlers are working on one thing at a time. My 4 yr old was and still is speech delayed so I know a lot about it. He talks a lot know and doing great, but still gets extra help.

My 2 yr old started talking really early then stopped. He was a late crawler and walker though. When he started crawling he wasn't talking as much then after he mastered walking he was getting at least a new word a day betwenn 16 months and 22 months and then keeps growing. Wait and see. Keep talking to your DD. Also, see what milestones she's on bc that will delay another milestone.
If at 18 months she hasn't added any more words then you should call EI just for a evaluation and peace of mind. Doesn't cost anything and if they don't qualify they give you advise.

"whats this?" is fairly advanced. At this age it is more about what they understand and following cues/directions. I wouldn't be concerned unless at 18-20 months more words are not added.

We were told 3 words by 15/18 mo. Partial words count as words too.

I'm a speech pathologist and at 15 months that's fine as long as your LO is demonstrating understanding and seems "connected" (maintaining eye contact, smiling, etc.). Expect to see more words popping out soon though! Also, keep in mind that anything your LO consistently says for an object/person counts as a word - that includes animal sounds! If your LO turns 18 months and hasn't added any words to her vocabulary or is becoming frustrated then I would contact a local agency for an evaluation.

My older DS had 50 words by the time he was 15 months and my middle DS was only saying mama and dada at 15 months - now he's 20 months and starting to talk in sentences. A lot can happen in a short time! Sometimes they just "get it" and take off! Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!
