Speech and Language delay?

My DD is 20 months old and says less then 10 words. Words that she used to know, she no longer says.

Everyone tells me that the speech will come and to give her a chance. They think I am over reacting (even my husband).

After coaxing from my Dr. I had her evaluated for speech.

I just received the report and I am very upset. They claim that she on a 12-15 month old level AND 33% delayed in receptive and expressive language.

Has anyone ever gone through this?

What can I do to help her?

Did they approve her for 2x45? Most of the time a child only needs 6 months of speech and they are discharged because their scores are within normal limits. It is usually a quick fix. Did she receive a core (psych or sped with sp). Did she score within normal limits for fine/gross motor,cognitive, adaptive and social? I work in EI, feel free to ask me any questions ;)

Coming with a child possibly on the spectrum (we're hoping he will grow out of his diagnosis), your concern should not necessarily be the lack of speech but the loss of speech. This was a very big flag. Can I suggest discussing it with your pediatrician and getting a psych eval? The agency you used for the speech eval can do this as well. I am goign to a metting next week to see if I was approved. She was also evaluated by a special ed teacher. She found she was normal except for social skills.

They mentioned she was 33% delayed? What does that mean and how do they come up with such a number?

That percentage of a delay is what EI looks for to determine that a child qualifies for services. I would expect that should would get approved for speech 2x45min.

Im an ABA teacher in Brooklyn, and agree with a previous poster who said the lost of speech is a bigger deal than lack of speech.

In Nyc, the magic number is 33% . A child will qualify for services if they have a 33% delay or more in one developmental domain (speech/language, cognitive, adaptive skills, social/emotional, fine motor, and gross motor) or 25% delay in 2 or more domains. Im not sure if it works the same on Long Island.

The number is usually obtained by using an assessment and the evaluators professional opinion.

Write down your questions and ask them to explain them to you at the meeting. You have the right to understand how they come up with the scores and percentiles.

ETA you can ask for a psych eval at your meeting

My DS is almost 21 months and does not speak at all. He occasionally says "Mom" and makes a few sounds but that's it. He was evaluated at 18m and qualified with a 34% delay. He now receives EI speech services 2x a week for 45 mins. I'm still not that worried because I have so many friends and family members who say their kids didn't talk until 2. In the meantime we just encourage other ways of communicating... signs, pointing, etc.

Both of my children had language delays. The best thing you can do is get therapy early on. Take everything they give you.

I did mommy and me- we tried a few different ones. Look for a small class size.

I enrolled them into nursery school. They learn so much from other children.

You just need to give it time.

Hey!!!! At 20 months I had concerns too, he seemed to plateau with words at that point. At 22 months I had the eval with EI and he qualified.
Please don't be upset, from what I remember they have to have a 33% TOTAL delay to qualify for any services - so let's say the speech delay was only 25% - she wouldn't qualify.
But that speech delay with say a 10% motor skills delay - would qualify!

So I would think 33% on speech alone is the starting point for speech services, kwim? And in any case the fact that you're on the ball and didn't just let it slide is a great thing. EI is amaaaaaazing and they helped my ds so much, I am a true believer that these therapists are ANGELS!!!

as a mom with a child on the spectrum, like a PP stated the loss of speech is alarming as is the lack of social skills.

wait till you have your ISFP meeting to discuss what services she will be getting
