Southwest flying question - does boarding position really matter?

If you're flying alone, does it really matter what position you board in? Aren't there usually middle seats available towards the front of the plane no matter what?

I'm flying to Chicago overnight for a wedding Sunday / Monday and as it turns out, I'll be on the plane to Chicago 24 hours before my return flight so I won't be able to check in at that 23:59 moment to get the best position possible... I'm trying to figure out if it even matters?

I'm flying RDU - MDW (Raleigh to Midway) if that makes any difference.

TIA!

If you're traveling alone, I don't think it makes much of a difference at all. When I travel alone, I don't sweat it if I don't check in in advance.

If you are really concerned about it, you can do the check in that's $10 and they do it automatically for yu.

I just flew last weekend. There are usually middle seats available the whole way back. People generally, myself included, keep going to the back to sit on the window or aisle. The only problem could be if you have a bag you want to put in the overhead bins, as those spaces do run out.

When I travel alone, I am never concerned about checking in.
