Sort Of Spinoff: School Lockdown Drills
Is there any kind of 'lockdown' drill at your child's school?
They have one in our district. The kids here a special code and they basically lock the doors, shut the shades and everyone hides.
I used to think that was a little unnecessary.
I don't think so anymore.

DS has had lockdown drills in school, he is in 3rd grade and I believe they do them twice a year. They are required to cover the door windows with paper, close the blinds and shut of the lights. The children then have to hide under their desks on the floor or in a corner until they are given the "all clear", they are not allowed to talk. DS said it was 'scary' and I personally feel it is sad that they have to do it, but at least they will be 'prepared' if they ever needed to actually lock down. I was in nursing school last year in our district, and we were also required to participate in these drills.

Yes. We lock the door, cover the door's window with a large piece of chart paper that is always next to the door and move all the students away from the windows and door. We wait in silence until we are told the drill is over. Such a sad world we live in.

Yes, and they have different procedures & drills for internal threats vs. external threats. They use code words so the kids have no idea what's going on.
Last year there was an armed bank robbery in our town and the suspect was on foot so the school was on lockdown for quite some time, they had all the shades closed so nobody could see in and kids stayed in their classrooms since our building has a lot of hallways with external windows. I thought it was handled really well, the kids had no idea that it was going on, they just thought it was a special fun, silly day where they got to have lunch in the classroom.
ETA: My kids have never talked about hiding under desks or anything, but I don't really want to ask and freak them out.

At the district where I work, they announce something over the loudspeaker, we have to lock our doors, turn off the lights, shut the blinds and hide in a corner. The custodian walks around checking each door to make sure it's locked.

People who work in schools...do you know if there is a mandate of how many times this has to be practiced, the way that fire drills are mandated?

I'm sure it's not much unlike the air raid drills in the 50's and 60's. Just instead of bombs its assholes with guns.

I was observing in a class in college and I saw them do this drill and I was SO horrified by it. I thought it was horrible to instill that fear into kids, and now hearing they did it so calmly today I just don't know. I hate that the world is like this.

I don't know if its a mandate like fire drills but we do it one or two times per yr.
I'm only asking because we didn't do any last year in my school and haven't done one yet this year...but we also did 5 fire drills in the 2 weeks before they were mandated to be done and didn't do our first one until the very end of September...

It's not about fear it's about comfort. It's just like fire drills or better yet the bomb drills that they had in the 60s (I think) when they had Nuclear bomb drills.

There is a safe room or two in each hallway that stays open about 30 seconds after the lockdown is called to get kids from the hall.

Yes we do. I believe it's the law. They take it very seriously at my school.
I heard a little girl interviewed (so sick that reporters were bothering her  ) and she was saying that her teacher turned off the lights, closed the blinds and made them all stand by the wall next to the door. My first thought was, "thank goodness she remembered her training." That's exactly what we're supposed to do, but I always wondered if I'd remember everything in a moment of panic.
