Some people are just disgusting!
I was just shopping in a store that happens to be very close to where the 3 yr old twins drowned. There was a customer who knew one of the women that was working there. They were talking for quite a while and as I got close to them, they started talking about the tragedy. They were saying things like "what was the mother doing being asleep at that time of day", "who knows what happens in other people homes"- all implying that the mother was somehow at fault. And then the woman who worked in the store said "well, you know, the husband wasn't home, so we'll never know if the mother DID something" and continued to "wink wink" imply that he mother threw those poor babies in the pool! I was livid. I should have said something but didn't. I was just so shocked. That f'n lady knows nothing about that family and what happened but felt it necessary to make up such horrible crap. Really disgusting!

I assume people gossip like that bc they 1) are hateful 2) do it to make themselves feel superior (like they're a better mom) or 3) subconsciously have had those thoughts themselves and project their outrage over their thoughts into someone else.

People seem to think that other people's tragedies are nothing more than fodder for their pathetic conversations and a distraction from their empty shittty lives.
Something to talk about and gossip about and play Monday morning quarterback on to distract them from the boring pathetic wasteland that is their own life.
They should pray that them or nobody they love ever experiences a tragedy and has to be subjected to assholes like themselves.

That's horrible! Wasn't it at like 8 am? That's pretty early in my household, my kids usually sleep til past 9 in the summer, and if they're sleeping, I'm usually sleeping (or trying to at least) because being a mom is exhausting and I'm sure being mom to twin toddlers is even more exhausting, so why the hell shouldn't she be sleeping still at 8 am

Ive heard a lot of people say similar things the past few days. I think its their way of mentally separating themselves from such a horrible tragedy. But it makes no sense to judge the mother when you dont know her or any of the facts.

Plus, how many times have we been fooled into thinking something was a tragic accident, or foul play by a third party, and wasn't. Remember Susan Smith, Casey Anthony, etc.? Not saying it's right to question it, or that is what happened in this tragic accident, but I can see exactly how people do.

i did actually just hear today that they are conducting a criminal investigation now. Not sure if that is some sort of routine procedure, or if there is reason to believe something else happened

I think it fear...fear that something this tragic could possibly happen to your family. But the truth is a "tragic accident" could happen to anyone. That's what makes it so frightening.

Yes this is correct.
It's a common psychological reaction to find differences between oneself and those who have experienced a tradegy or misfortune. We also tend to blame the person vs circumstance in attributing others' behavior. All of this helps us feel safe in an unsafe and unpredictable world. Like "that couldn't possibly happen to me."

YES. But then the person doing that usually causes immense hurt. Like when you say that your loved one has lung cancer, and someone's first reaction is "Did they smoke?" And you realize that all they care about is asking invasive, insensitive questions until they can create enough distance for THEM to be comfortable.
I would have been to paralyzed with horror.disgust to say something if I had been at the store, but I would have wished that I or someone else would have reminded the rude clerk that she never knows who is shopping there and that that kind of talk/gossip is beyond toxic, cruel, and nasty.
