some "flying with kids logistical questions
We are leaving for Disney this weekend and flying.
1) You can bring carseats on a plane, right? We were going to bring the carseats and booster for the kids?
2) Are boosters allowed?
3) We are bringing an umbrella stroller. Do I have to check it with baggage or can I gate check it?
4) Is there a limit to car/booster seats/strollers you can bring on the plane with you?
5) How the hell do you get the carseats through the airport?
Luckily, we are flying out of Islip, so its not a big airport, but Orlando with the monorail if I remember correctly, take FOREVER to get out of.
Logistically, how do you do it with all of that extra stuff, aside from kids and carry-ons?

I would check car seats. Not all seats are approved for airplane use. I fly all the time with DS and have never used a seat.
Gate check stroller.
The less you bring out to the gate the better you are.

I know the carseats say FAA approved on them. Ill have to check the booster. Thanks!!!
How do you check a booster? Do I have to put it in something?

Booster seats aren't allowed, they don't have lap/shoulder belts on the plane.
If it's a no back booster, bring it on and put it in the overhead bin. If it's a full one, put it in a bag and check the bag when you check your other bags.

Do not check your booster or car seat. They get tossed around and could be damaged. Bring the carseat on board for your child to use. While you don't technically need it, it keeps the seat, and your child safer.
Boosters can't be used on planes. If its a backless booster, make it that child's carry on and put int overhead, if its a high back the come apart, take it apart and pack the back in a suitcase cushioned by clothes and carry on the bottom. If it doesn't come apart, bring it to the gate and gate check it. It could still get damaged that way ( you should've seen my stroller after my last flit experience, luckily it was a cheap umbrella and not my real stroller).
As far as getting the seats to the gate, I bought a collapsible luggage cart at target and bungee corded my carseat to it. Then I dragged it behind me filled with the carryons and my DH pushed the stroller. We stuffed the stroller with as much as we could and. Wore the baby in my carrier.
Those gate check bags don't really protect from damage, just dirt.

When you check your car seat - what do you put it on? Leaving on Thursday and trying to figure this all out, too. Seems like a lot to have to bring stroller, car seat, carry on bags AND a 16 month old through the airport (at 5AM, no less!  ). Also - what about the stroller? Last time we gate checked our stroller it ended up soaking wet because we didn't cover it.

i got a car seat bag on wheels when i traveled and i gate checked it. it was a pita to get around the airport though, i think next time i would just baggage check it

Before you baggage check your carseat, go on you tube and watch videos of how the handle your luggage. And then think about whether or not you would trust that seat anymore to keep your child safe.
Also, luggage gets lost and damaged. What are you going to do if you get to your destination and your carseat is either broken or doesn't show up at all?

I bought a car seat bag with wheels. It was $44 at BBB.
Just an FYI to all the people who would rather gate check something. It all ends up in the same place....can still get damaged or thrown around. The gate check items do not go into a special place they just get brought to the gate at the end of the flight. If you do not need it do yourself a favor and check it out front.....the less you lug through the airport the happier you will be. Trust me I have done it all different ways and the more enjoyable flights were ones I had a stroller DS and diaper bag. The trip I brought the world was a nightmare at security and trying to get everything ready for gate check.

thats the problem, we have a rent a car set up, with a request for carseats, but they cannto "guarantee" a carseat will be available when you get there. WTF!

Right, they don't guarantee one. Stupid I know. Also know guarantee your kid will fit in it, that's its never been in a crash, etc.
To the op, get a rolling collapsible luggage cart. Or it's ot a huge britax seat or something, you can sometimes jam it into the stroller basket to get it through the airport.

If your carseat is checked and lost, the airline has loaners. Our carseat was put on the wrong flight one year coming home. Southwest let us borrow theirs. Crappy, but what can you do. We were given a hefty voucher though for the inconvenience.

We always check in our car seats with our luggage and gate check the stroller.
This is what works for our family:
1. I pull up the car to the curb of departures
2. DH starts taking car seats out of car while I put kids in double stroller and give them a snack to eat to keep them busy for 5 min
3. I get luggage out of the trunk
4. DH takes car seats and luggage in to check in counter (or curb side check in if available)
5. I push double stroller with kids inside to meet DH
6. I run back to car and park
7. I usually have the carry on(s) and bring it with me to go meet DH and the kids at the gate
When we get to Orlando, we only need to push the double stroller onto the monorail at the airport. Rental cars and magic express are super close to baggage claim at Orlando's airport. You can get a cart or get a porter to carry your luggage and car seats from baggage claim. Very easy.
