Well with dd2 I had the epidural, but long story short it didn't work so when I pushed it was without anything.
Same here with my first. It was not a pleasant experience. I think if I were mentally prepared for a natural birth it wouldn't have been as bad. She is 16 months and I haven't forgotten it.
My DD is 5 and I haven't' forgotten that 1 hour of pushing that I felt and how God flucking awful it was. I was begging for death. And I had an epi. I felt NO contractions from 4 cm when I got it under I was ready to push. But feeling the pushing and the crowing is something I will never forget and only added to me being one and done

Right after I had dd1 the nurse joked about having a second baby. I was all for it. I felt great. This time after I had the baby and that pain I said never again. Not sure I meant it, but I will never forget that insane pain. It was under 10 minutes but my Gd. I was screaming for drugs.

I remember you posting something similar before I had DD1 and bring terrified of labor because of it lol. I feel very fortunate that once they took my epi button away, all I felt was a bad period cramp on my left side when I had a contraction and that's when I knew to push. And the only reason I knew she was almost out was because a swarm of medical people surrounded me and put some slide looking thing at the edge of my bed. Next thing I knew DD was on my belly and I didn't feel a damn thing.
And now I'm scared for labor with #2

so who here has had a natural birth?
I've had 2...The first was not on purpose and the second was because I figured if I could do it once I could do it again!!
Obviously I have zero idea what labor feels like for anyone else...but to me I didn't feel it was THAT painful. I also have an older sister who has never fully gotten back the feeling in one of her legs after her epidural, oh that frightened me a bit also.
Both of my recoveries were fantastic and honestly after the baby was out I felt like I could run a marathon!! I felt great!

Re: so who here has had a natural birth?
I have had two, both planned though the second didn't go as planned. My first DS I took a bradley class and had 30 hours of labor, but the 12 hours in the hospital (was 5 cm when I got there) was beyond excruciatingly painful. I was also begging to die, and when they offered pain meds I felt that the only thing that would have been helpful was general anesthesia. I ended up needing an episiotomy and the recovery was pretty rough. With my second I hired a doula to help me cope with the pain more effetively ( and to help my husband). I also read birthing from within which is excellent and validates that labor is hard and painful but you can do it. Most people don't have orgasmic pain free births without medical interventions. So armed with that I labored with my second at home as long as I felt comfortable and called the doula to let her know I was ready to go to the hospital. DD had other plans and was born in 3 pushes and 4 hours of total labor at home with me standing over my couch. The doula caught the baby, I had no episiotomy (she was almost a pound heavier then my DS), didn't need to go to the hospital at all, and recovery was amazing. I think 2nd babies are often easier/faster and though I don't advocate for home birth in general, for me it made labor/delivery a million times better and I look back on my 2nd birth with amazement and awe rather then remembering only pain (though it did hurt a lot at the time). I highly recommend an experienced doula and or midwife even if planning a hospital birth (like I was). They are amazing

Re: so who here has had a natural birth?
I was 10 cm before the anesthesiologist showed up. I told them I wasn't pushing without my epidural and since my OB hadn't arrived yet, they gave it to me. I stopped feeling all contractions then, despite being fully dilated. They let me rest for almost 2 hours and then I still couldn't feel anything but they let me push and DD came out in 3 pushes. I was in SO much pain that I was glad I got the epi, but in retrospect, I could've had it over and done with much faster if I just pushed without the epi. The anxiety of the 2 hours of waiting to push was not great for me.

so who here has had a natural birth?
I did and it wasn't totally planned. I wanted a natural birth, but I was also open to not having one, if need be. I knew my Mom had two quick natural births (my brother and I were both born with about 3.5 hrs of labor), so I hoped that perhaps I had the same "easy" birth genes. Apparently I did.
I went into labor around 7/730am on a Saturday morning, contractions were immediately only 30 seconds apart and I honestly have no clue how I managed to not give birth in the car on the way to the hospital. I took no birthing classes and just thank years of yoga for helping me stay calm and breath effectively. I got to the hospital around 940am and DD was born at 1016am, I don't even think the Dr was in the room.
I do remember it being ridiculously painful and telling the nurses "just get her out however you need to" but I think I only pushed 3 or 4 times before she was born. Getting stitched up afterwards was more traumatic for me than giving birth, I can vividly remember what that felt like whereas, while I know birth was totally and immensely painful, I can't actually remember what it felt like, if that makes any sense.

so who here has had a natural birth?
I want to! I don't do well with needles so one going into my spine doesn't sound like something I'm interested in. My sister told me to switch my doctor because he didn't work with her plans. She heard great things about stoneybrook midwives group.

I hate needles but honestly didn't feel the epi needle going in at all. Maybe it was bc I was concentrating too hard on not moving while having contractions as they were doing it lol. I didn't feel them remove it either.
I hear great things about the midwives. They work out of the same office as my ob/MFM. The women at the front desk can be nasty but I like my Drs too much to switch.

Re: so who here has had a natural birth?
With my first I had a failed epi and felt everything. With my second I had nothing (not even an iv) and it was great. If I go for a 3rd I would absolutely go natural again. Recovery was a breeze!

Re: so who here has had a natural birth?
With DS, my first, I had an epidural. He was also vacuumed out because the epi was so much that I wasn't pushing correctly.
With DD#1, my second, I did not have an epidural (not by choice, she came pretty fast upon arriving to the hospital). I wanted the drugs because I was expecting to get the epi the entire pregnancy. It hurt like hell but I think a lot of that was because I wan't mentally prepared. I will tell you though that the recovery and baby were the complete opposite of my first delivery. My DD was so alert. She was an amazing breastfeeder from day 1 and I felt amazing. I knew if we ever went for #3 I would not get any drugs because of how much better I felt and how much better the baby was (in my opinion).
Fast forward I just had #3 three weeks and it was another DD. I planned a homebirth so obviously drugs/pain relief were not an option. Yes, it hurt, but I was prepared for it. It was an amazing experience and the recovery has been the easiest of all three.
If we have a fourth, it will be another drug-free homebirth, God willing.

so who here has had a natural birth?
I had a natural birth with dd on purpose.
Started noticing contractions around 830? In the morning. Finally headed to the hospital and got there at 430, only because I was bleeding. Contractions were never that bad for me. Started pushing at 440, didn't even have time for an iv which made me super happy.
After an hour of pushing dd was born at 534. I did get an episiotomy and fought the doctor over using a local through a shot, but she had to cut me twice. Dd was 8 lbs 4 oz.

Not with the first one but really hoping with this one. Btw, I hate when ppl think of mothers that prefer a natural birth as in trying to be a hero! How about finding out the reasons why natural births are better and then talk! Lol

I hate when people think of mothers that prefer a medicated, pain free birth as making the inferior choice to the so called "better" natural birth.

Re: so who here has had a natural birth?
When it comes down to labor, you will know what to do. Everything kind of goes out the window and you just go with the flow and what your body tells you. Either way you will be fine, and at the end, no matter how that baby comes out, with drugs, without, C section etc- you will totally feel like a rock star! Like- hey if I could do this, I can do ANYTHING!

I didn't feel the needle either, both times- I guess I was in so much pain from my contractions that I didn't care what they stuck in me.
Hats off to those who had a natural birth though, I don't know how I could have done it.

I had the epi with DD1 and DD2 and would like to not get the epi with DD3. I totally understand wanting the medication - I was induced with DD1 and got the epi early, and had terrible back labor with DD2 and was screaming in pain for the epi - and I don't judge anyone who gets it, but you really can't argue that a natural birth is the best thing for the mother and baby (in most situations). There are many side effects of the epi, and some of them can be long lasting.

I hate when people think of mothers that prefer a medicated, pain free birth as making the inferior choice to the so called "better" natural birth.
When I said "better", I wasn't referring to every single birth, of course there are exemptions when medical reasons play a priority role, but these are not common, and they're not the majority of cases. Usually when a mother prefers a natural birth, it's because she has done enough research about drugs, whether pitocin, epidural, etc and what it can mean to a baby (still in the uterus and after being born) and to a mother (also during labor, and after). Having said this, a woman that after doing enough research still decides to have a medicated birth, it's her life, it's her choice, any type of judgement should be irrelevant at that point.
Hope this helps clarifies why choice of word on my first post.

What is better is a decision a mother makes with her doctor. i don't consult Dr. Google when making decisions about what is better for me and my child.
Good for those that have an unmedicated birth and good for those who have a medicated birth. What matters is what works for you
