So the NYPD got $crewed again in their contract...

From what I understand this is what the news is reporting was settled:

1) 10% over 2 years for veterans bring top pay to $65k
2) Pay increase of $10,000 for rookies bringing starting salary to $35k
3) Rookies only get 10 vacation days until they reach 5 years

AND they are still 2 years out of a contract!!!!! This was only for 2004 and 2005.

Every other city dept. still makes more than the NYPD...even the friggin garbage men Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

IMHO, I hope more cops continue to leave the NYPD as they have been....I hope people still decline to even take the exam (they offer the test a ton more and still can't get people to take it)....they are basically hiring people with criminal and arrest records at this point b/c they are so hard up for cops....I hope the cops start doing things by the book and stop working causing the crime rates to go back up...

This is the police dept that about 20 yrs ago there was a waiting list to become an NYPD cop, now they can't pay people to join literally. The PBA spent about $17 million dollars to take this to PERB and try and get a fair deal and this is what they walked away withChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I gotta say the 10k raise for rookies is pretty significant. That's a 40% salary increase.

Yeah 35k is still peanuts next to cost of living, but I am sure an extra 10k will really make a difference in a lot of young cops families.

You can't. You can get a job as a secretary starting out making more Chat Icon

The best is the starting salary for puppeteers in Central Park is more than that for the NYPD Chat Icon

I agree. A good friends DH is going through the testing now and while it's peanuts, that's 10K more than what they were planning on and will be helpful to them.

That's not to say the contract is acceptable at all. As a NYC teacher, starting salaries have jumped tremendously over the past few years b/c so many were leaving. They had to compete with other areas. I hope the PD follows suit and offers something more acceptable.

Guys and Girls that always dreamed of being an NYPD (either from family or just dreams) will take the job regardless of pay. You don't become an NY Police Officer for the money and most NYPD officers are part of two income families because they need it.

That's why the raise is significant. A 40% raise from the city IMO is a big step. They could have offered a 10% raise which would only be 27500.

I really don't understand why the NYPD gets such crappy contracts. Is it the PBA? The city? It makes no sense. I'm a NYC teacher and my salary has jumped like crazy since I started. We always get big raises with every contract. I just don't get it. Someone is not fighting for them, that's for sure.

And just think of how much more they will be making in overtime too thanks to the raise. Thats time and a half on top of a 40% raise.

I come from a family of cops so you are preaching to the choir in regards to the NYPD being underpaid.

However this is a huge step forward for the rookies. Good for them.

NYC cops and teachers are underpaid most likely because of the city's defecit. This is a city that's closing down firehouses.

I dont think it has anything to do with the PBA.

For some reason the city, especially Bloomberg, HATES the NYPD. Probably b/c they didnt support him when he was elected...the PBA supported someone else. Supposably this PBA President, Pat Lynch, has fought for the NYPD more than anyone else has in the past but Bloomberg always cries poverty and says the city is broke which is BS. And Ray Kelly, that a$$hole, doesnt still up for the cops at all and you think he would being he has been there.

Regardless, the cops in NYC are not respected and won't be until they make a decent salary and until the Mayor respects them and that will not be happening any time soon!

But the top pay for the NYFD is $72k....right now the NYPD top pay is only $59k and was just bumped up to $65k with this new contract. Why is there or why should there be a difference in salary, KWIM.

I am not all too familiar with the specifics but I definitely agree.

What are the starting salaries now between the different organizations? PD/FD/SAN/CO

I thought the COs or Sanitation workers were paid the most out of the group but my info is probably dated. Chat Icon

40% is not a good raise when they're grossly under-paid in the first place.

NYPD is the lowest paid out of all the agencies:

FDNY is at $72k
Sanitation is at $68k
Corrections officers are at $66 or $67k I think

Mind you, when the other agencies settle contracts there are usually no give-backs...when the NYPD settles they give back vacation days (like the rookies will be), changes in OT pay (maybe they have to take x amount of hours in time, rather than pay) and from what I understand in this contract the police officers will have to qualify at the range (which is mandatory) on their own time.

only 9.5%, crissy... and now we have to go to the range on a vacation day Chat Icon
so... yesterday i evicted a family out of their home (bunch of kids, the mom was @ work and they had no idea she hadn't paid rent in over a year) AND handled the crime scene of a 16 year olf who got shot in the back of the head, had to tell the mother her 16year old son was dead, while she was staring at his shoe sticking out of the white sheet on the sidewalk and now have to go id his body at the morgue this morning... all for a 6k raise?
what a slap in the f-in face Chat Icon
yes, our pct had 2 homicides plus 4 other shooting victims and 2 stabbings in less than 48 hours and NO i didn't take this job for the $$ but i damn well deserve more than sanitation. i'm sorry.
i worked 17hours yesterday and found out about the pos contract, while i was vouchering the victim's bloody clothes and watching myself on the news so i am CRAAANKY!!!

I know Sanitation has an very strong and aggresive union which is why they are paid so well....PBA needs to be more aggresive

no offense to those in other city agencies---but there is NO WAY that anyone can justify to me that NYPD makes less than Sanitation......they should be earning at least the same as FDNY. this is truly a disgrace. its crap like this that makes me PRAY that my dh gets called for suffolk, nassau or even westchester.

You are 100% right. And that is why the city is losing cops at a rapid clip.
THey are leaving in droves to go to other police departments, to the FD, to SANITATION. They are retiring early- doing ANYTHING to leave.
Just wait- in 10 years the crime is going to be rising again. Because the city has absolutely NO WAY of recruiting or retaining cops with the way they treat them.
So in the long run the city is going to suffer - BIG TIME.
But that's ok- save a penny now, right Bloomberg?
Penny wise and VERY pound foolish!

My brother is one of those who is going into the academy in the summer because this is his DREAM! He could care less about the pay, the danger or anything else. We have prayed he would change his mind but just like my dad and uncle, its his passion. Insane!

yeah i totally understand the dream aspect. that is why my DH joined...he always wanted to be a cop....its not about the pay for him. BUT in the real world...we need good money to live in NY! i don't think he needs some like 200K salary (would be nice of course. lol) i just think its a slap in the face that people who risk their lives and protect the community earn the LEAST amount of the city's departments. its just not right!!!

i saw this today and had to chuckle. this isn't directed at the employees of the agencies--more like how NYPD has to feel compared to other police departments

It's not only the pay that $ucks...it's how they are treated...with no respect and no appreciation from the mayor, the city, the residents or the police department itself.

What would possess people to think the best way to cut a budget or to save money was through it's police department Chat Icon yet, so much is expected of them. It's not like they are making $200k. But is it too much to ask them to be paid the same as the FDNY???

There are still those few that will join the NYPD b/c it is supposed to be the greatest police department in the world...who doesnt want to say "I'm a NYC cop"...but once they get there they get disgruntled and angry very easily b/c they are treated like $hit. I mean for god sake, DH has to buy his own uniforms, handcuffs, guns, he even bought a new vest which was over $1,000 b/c the vest he had was in such bad shape. The police department only provided him with a new vest after 6 years...Chat Icon
