So mad **UPDATED**
Went to look at cars this weekend and got offered a good deal. They wanted 500 to hold the card and said we could get it back if we didnt want the car. I found another car I wanted elsewhere and now they ownt give me the 500 back!! I signed 1 piece of paper that said NOTHING about not getting the money back. We were suppose to go back tonight to sit with the Manager to go over credit, etc so I do not see what contract we have with them. They said we could get it back and now wont give it back. They said they would give us a credit. i want my d@mn money back!
**UPDATE** They are giving me my money back. I called to start yelling and they sasid to come by tonight with my card and they will refund the money. I called and said it was a buyers order and not a contract and that since they were going to approve me for the money to lease, I was covered under the lending z agreement and by law I an entitled to the money back. He apologized for the way the manager talked to my DH

Re: So mad
VW did that to me as well. They wanted to credit the money to another VW but I changed my mind and did not want a VW anymore.
Good luck getting it back, took me 6 months, but you can get it back.

Re: So mad
Im trying to get it back now. They wanted 2000 and I said no so they did 500. I was reluctant because I didnt want to give it to them in fear of not getting it back but they promised (both the manager and salesperson) that if I didnt want the car, I would get it back. Im on the phone with the 1800 chrysler/dodge people now

OMG I cant believe you said those 2 dealerships, I work with them in an indirect way, and they are the worst people to deal with. And the owners have more money than god. ETA: they are owned by the same big boss.

I never heard of that- I leased 2 cars and bought 1 in the last 2 year
with the 2 leases I gave them $500 once I decided I wanted the car- not to hold the car- they held it for me for 24 hours for free
and with the one I bought I gave them money to hold the car b/c they were in Michagan and they only had one with muiltiple people interested!

But she said it didn't say anything about NOT getting the money back.
I had this happen to me a few years ago and after trying to reason with them and play nice, I wound up standing in their show room loudly threatening to call the Better Business Bureau on them.
They gave me the money back that night and said everything was just a "big misunderstanding".
Jerks.

Re: So mad
its horrible but car dealerships can be very shady, They can make you sign a peice of paper and then add text to it after you leave. They did this to me. They wrote down on the contract vin etching with no price next to it.We thought it was free that it was just a spec of the car Then I got the bill in the mail and it said vin etch- 2k$$$$ We fought so hard but they wouldnt take it off, and they said that we signed blah blah blah. It was a horrible experience and we lost 2k and alot of stress. Baron Auto mall- stay away! They are very shady!
eta: we threatened with better business bureau, handed out flyers to customers in the showroom about what they did to us and they still wouldnt take it off! We filed complaints and everything nothing came of it. Just horrible. Now we only buy new cars. It seems that used cars salesmen are the worst when it comes to these things.

I'm sorry that happened to you. In the future, always get a copy of the contract. That way, you have proof if they try to alter it. They cannot alter terms of the contract without your approval (typically your initials/signature and their initials next to the changes).

Re: So mad
I have the contract and it specifically states on the bottom - that if I do not want to enter the deal in its entirety I will get a complete refund. We are still getting a car from the same car compeny, just a different dealer because I found the exact one I wanted. The new salesperson we have there told us it is illegal for them to keep our money. She was trying to get it back. My next step is to speak to the owner of the car place. We already blocked them on our credit card, so they are getting the charge through. The credit card guy laughed because he said it was ridiculous because I am covered by that paragraph on the contract--its called regulation z - truth in lending.

Re: So mad **UPDATED**
Legend in Amityville did this to me a few years ago. they made me give a $500 deposit on my credit card - I ended up changing my mind about the car and they refused to give me my deposit back. I ended up disputing it with my credit card company and later on going into the dealership and causing a scene. Soooo not my nature, but I reached my breaking point with them.

Re: So mad **UPDATED**
This happened to my parents but for the $2000 deposit!!! It happened at Hustedt Chevy in Centereach. They wouldn't give him the deposit back and told my Dad "take us to court for it". In the long run it would have cost my dad more to sue for it, so he was just out the $$. I am sure the dealership knew that and I wonder how many other people they do that to. I would NEVER shop there for a car or recommend them based on how they treated my dad.

Re: So mad **UPDATED**
Thanks Its a NY State law that they have to give it back, unless you give them case. Because I gave it to them on a credit card and because I was going to finance the car through them, if I decided I didnt like the terms, I could back out at any time with a complete refund

Re: So mad **UPDATED**
good, I am glad that worked out for you.
I was once away on a trip and dH put down 500. on a car that I was supposed to be shopping for. I found it via vvoicemail. I ripped him a new one, but the dealer gave back the cash.

I'm gald they finally did the right thing. It's aggrivating that they didn't do it right away and without a fight.
