It's been 6 months since I went off the pill. For the last 3 months, I've been using OPKs.

I'm under 35 (34 exactly) so my GYN originally told me to wait a year before seeing a specialist. Is there anything I can do in the meantime? Should DH get his sperm tested? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the guy usually gets tested first since it's an easy "procedure" right? And if DH gets tested, can he just go to a urologist? Or does it have to be a reproductive specialist?

I just don't understand why it's taken so long.

I had been off the pill for over 6 years and it still took 8 months. I would definitely ask about getting DH tested, I can't see the harm in it. Some OBs are very conservative when it comes to recommending REs, so I would ask them what their reasoning is at this point. GL!

I mention it alot on here but I'll say it again bc there is no harm in trying...you BOTH can try taking mucinex or anything with the main active ingredient of guaifenesen. It helps loosen the mucous making the sperm travel more easily. Many women try it and don't know that it has actually been known to help men who may have "thicker" sperm consistency making it hard for them to get to the egg.

not much harm in trying...but yes. I'd look into both of you getting tested...it can't hurt anything

also, have you tried pre-seed?

also, if you were on the pill for a long time 6 months isn't long at all. it takes time for your body to get back to normal and adust. try not to stress about it because I can tell you from experience and from other peoples stories...as soon as you stop stressing is usually when it happens. more often than not

I was on the pill for 10 years straight.

And I never heard the thing about mucinex either. I will try that. I never tried pre-seed either.

I do eat low fat dairy though..I read that there is a link between low fat dairy products and ovulation problems. I can cut back on that.

You don't have to wait a year before going to a specialist. I went after six months and found out some interesting things. The sooner the better

pre-seed is great. Not sure if you use lubes when you Chat Icon Chat Icon (you don't have to answer that) but most widely distributed brand name lubes are actually toxic to sperm and can really lower chances of conception. Pre-seed however is not toxic to sperm.

I was just going to suggest this too. I waited 6 months. I'm glad I went when I did.

Re: So it's been 6 months..

most doctors will say wait 1 year if your under 35, 6 months if your older before seeing an RE, but of course there's no reason why you cant go sooner.

If your insurance covers IF - you should call them and find out what their rules are. You will probably have to qualify for servies and they typically go by that 6 mos/1 year rule before they cover services.

yes, getting DH sperm tested is the most non-invasive test, so docs recommend you do that first. Any urologist can do it.

This is what I did. After 6 months I called my insurance and they said there is no waiting period to go see an RE as long as you are between 21-42. The next day I made an appointment with an RE.

If you feel like there is an issue then go get tested.

Re: So it's been 6 months..

I was the infertility goddess at 25. Age on your side helps, but ultimately what will be will be. I'd say get tested if that's what you want to do. Best case scenario you will find out there's nothing wrong with you - OR you will find out there is something wrong and will be grateful you didn't 'waste' anymore time! Good luck!

ETA: I suspected an issue and saw an RE after being off the pill and not ovulating at all in 3 months. My insurance didn't ask any questions.
