Re: So i really cant have goat cheese
of course it's a personal decision, but it's very rare that goat cheese will be unpasteurized. i would eat it if i were you.

Re: So i really cant have goat cheese
Can you call the restaurant and ask if the cheese is pasteurized? It definitely would help ease your mind!

Most goat cheese is pasturized in this country, ask anyway, but you should be fine

Re: So i really cant have goat cheese
if you eat tuna, I can't understand why you would balk at unpasteurized cheese.
anyway, it's warmed and it most likely IS pasteurized.
I would eat ANY cheese before I would eat tuna.

Tuna is not on the list of DO NOT HAVE, you are just supposed to limit your intake to 2x a week and under (light tuna), Unpasteurized cheese is on the list of DO NOT HAVE due to listeria. Not saying that is would stop me though..

I don't really believe in the "list". women in japan still eat sushi, and I am sure women in greece and france still eat goat cheese. all of these countries produce healthy offspring.
tuna contains MERCURY. as a fact. for sure. if I take in tuna, I am taking in mercury.
cheese does NOT as a fact have listeria. it is a fear. not a fact.
I am trying to base my choices on fact.
I am not knocking anyone elses choices...or anyone for following "the list" I think the list itself is weirdly configured though.

Re: So i really cant have goat cheese
Everything in moderation, Miche. That is my advice. I had small amounts of Feta every now and then, ate Tuna, hot dogs, etc. I even had a glass or two of wine in the 2nd tri. the onyl thing I cut out cold turkey was social smoking. With that said, do what is best for you.
You can ask for it on the side so you can control the portion. As some PP said, it is more than likely pasturized anyway- you'll find that when you buy it in the super market too.

Re: So i really cant have goat cheese
i always laugh at these posts because 30 years ago, they didn't have these "lists" (which by the way differ from doctor to doctor which inherently means it's BS) and we all came out fine. people used to SMOKE when they were pregnant and we worry about eating goat cheese! how is it that one doctor can say lox is okay but another says it's not? it's because they're making a personal choice for their patients based on nothing factual.

I agree with you about 'the list' - there are things that I choose to not put into my body whether I'm pregnant or not that are not necessarily DO NOT eat items (like artificial sweeteners if I can possibly avoid it)
But I think everything in moderation (yes, even alcohol! )
The one thing that you do have to think about though is that even moderate consumption of things like soft cheeses can pose a risk. Either the cheese you're going to eat contains listeria or it doesn't. Unfortunately, there's no way to tell, so "they" say avoid it completely just to be safe. Obviously your chances of contracting listerosis increase the more you consume stuff that may contain it, but in reality the chances of getting it from a little bit of goat's cheese is really really small.
I say enjoy!

Re: So i really cant have goat cheese
All of the restaurants that I have asked about whether their goat, feta, etc. is pasteurized, said yes they are. They said they are not allowed to have unpasteurized cheese. I think you are fine.
